A comedy manga through and through, you'll get good laughs for sure. However, you won't exactly get amazing plot nor will you get any elaborate character arcs. The gag focused on the fact that an old geezer Yakuza boss found himself put into weird situations that would've never happen in his life normally, and how his new appearance + circumstances gave him a new perspective (or just being the old man he is despite his looks). The characters and their relationships are probably the reason you'll stay to read further, as they are hilarious and has great dynamic with each other. They have their small arcsand development, but no massive change will happen to any of these characters. There is some plot going in the background to keep your attention to the story every now and then between his daily life antics as a cute middle schooler. Although shallow the story is in no way boring, the action (usually put at the beginning of a chapter just to remind you that this is a manga about Yakuza war) is a neat bonus: such as like mobster shoot outs, assassinations, and for our titular character Shiomi-chan some fights using his (her) trusty katana that he (she) keeps around at all time (well, most of the time). By no means this make everything dark toned or serious, it's there to juxtapose between his 2 lives and enhance the comedy. The art style isn't your typical cutesy and pretty style that you'll find in manga nowadays, so it is refreshing. If you find that premise and humor to be right up your alley, you just want some fun time and laughs, or you just want to read and try something you don't usually read, then this is quite a nice read on your spare time.
Gen Shiomi, the 56-year-old boss of the Hitotsubashi mob syndicate, must go into hiding to protect his life from potential assassins. He opts to get plastic surgery, only to end up looking like a teenage girl, but he resolves to stay like this until his life is no longer in danger. However, he finds it hard to not be suspicious, but he is saved from being the target of police by a teenage boy named Tatsuya Umemiya. After helping Tatsuya out of some troubles of his own, Gen is forced to enroll into junior high school as "Shiomi Iwao," only to discover that one of his new classmates is Tatsuya. (Source: MU)
I remember reading this series many years ago and thanks to the "challenge," I just quickly re-read the manga. This sad to end early story just consisted of a powerful Gang boss who got an operation to look like a teenage girl? I haven't seen many titles use this kind of setup, so it's very rare? It's good to see the MC isn't overly powerful in any way whatsoever. It's within the realistic aspects of being a human who learned combat skills. Pair this with his interactions of regular students and school life while fighting off gangsters. The long term potential was there since it achieved goodbalance all around, though this just another series that ended a bit too early.
