The final chapter 127 was released today. I caught up with this a year or so ago and since then only about 8 chapters dropped (monthly release problems lol). Spoiler free review. Overall: 8.5 / 10 (rounding it to 9) The plot can be summarized like this: MC "calculates" everything 10 chapters ahead of everyone else. Light Yagami, Lelouch kind of vibes. Give it a read and keep in mind that the first 10 or so chapters will feel like "What the hell happened / How did they end up like this" but you will understand everything as you keep reading. The ending was satisfying (for me).The story came together and concluded nicely, although I would say one of the "biggest reveals" was tad bit underwhelming (or maybe I saw it coming?). It doesn't take away anything from the story though. There are plot twists after plot twists and you will be kept wondering if a character is actually a friend or a foe. Some games were lacklustre I think but for the most part they were enjoyable. There are some BS deus ex machina moments for MC, or times where the smartest characters (other than MC) don't seem so smart. Typical, it is a shounen mind games manga after all.
Yuuichi Katagiri has battled financial hardships his whole life but has learned to stay content and positive thanks to his close circle of friends. To keep a promise he made to them, Yuuichi saves up enough money to join them on the school trip. But when the gathered money mysteriously goes missing, suspicion falls on two of Yuuichi's friends: Shiho Sawaragi and Makoto Shibe, who were in charge of collecting the payments. Although innocent, Shiho and Makoto take responsibility for the failure to protect the money when no one else comes forward. A few days later, Yuuichi and his friends receive mysterious letters which trick each of them into meeting up. Upon arrival, they are ambushed and knocked unconscious. They wake up in a mysterious room in the presence of "Manabu-kun," a character from a controversial children's show that stopped airing due to its malicious content. He informs the group that one of them indirectly gathered them together in order to settle a large debt. They are to play a "friendship game": a series of games that will test the strength of their bond and trust in each other. As the group's faith wavers due to the growing number of secrets and betrayals, Yuuichi must figure out who of his "friends" he can actually trust and ultimately discover the identity of the traitor. Friendship and Betrayal~ Unlike many psychological thrillers that focus purely on survival, the story is filled with intricate mind games and unexpected twists. Tomodachi Game revolves around the concept of testing friendships through deception, manipulation, and financial debt. It challenges the idea of whether money or trust is more valuable. The protagonist, Yuichi Katagiri, is a fascinating character who constantly outsmarts opponents with his intelligence and strategic thinking. If you love Liar Game or Kaiji you will definitely love the unpredictable nature of competition on this one. It also have a very diverse and unique characters, rather than relying on simple archetypes, the author simply givesdepth to its cast. Each character has their own motivations, secrets, and weaknesses, making it hard to tell who is truly trustworthy. (Btw, I love Social Deduction Games and I like how the author incorporates the social deduction vibes on this series.)
The first 10 chapters are really good. All we know is that we have a group of friends, and the game organisers are trying to break up the friendship by showing doubts and offering money as a reward. Then there's a retcon I didn't really like regarding a certain character. The author repeats this throughout the story. What is established about a character gets thrown out in the next game, all for the sake of a subversion, a twist. Still, it's intriguing and entertaining, till chapter 50 or so, that is. Then the decline into absurdity begins. There's only so much suspension of disbelief thatis possible on the part of a reader, when in every new game it's like the characters memories get reset. They forget how yuuichi is a liar and a manipulator, and get fooled again and again. This gets very tiresome after a point, and it defeats the purpose of the twists in an ironic way, as the story has now become predictable. No matter what the situation is, yuuichi has planned everything from the first moment and will win anyway. But that can't possibly be true because he couldn't be prepared for every contingency, and I'm talking about that scene during the forest game where he falls off a cliff. How the hell did he know a branch would be there? Ridiculous. That is just one example. More and more characters are introduced, the games that were intricate and strategic become action packed shootouts. There's retcon after retcon, twist after twist(each more absurd than the last) till the final bell tolls, and we are left with an ending we don't care about so much because we stopped caring a long time ago. The way the female characters are portrayed is also a joke, as it's either buttshots or boobshots, even when they are talking. The art starts out incredible, then slowly decreases in quality. The games are well designed and some of the foreshadowing is great, ultimately it becomes too repetitive and predictable for its own good, which is ironic since this series is all about twists. The question that is begged towards the end, after all the reveals is, were the characters ever really friends even? That makes the central theme of the entire manga moot, and the ending scene pointless. It's still very entertaining, so give it a chance , maybe.
Sadly I forgot to write or review this series when I first read it so I must go off of memory. But also I really enjoyed this one and I think there's an interesting part to this series. I try not to address other reviews, but I want to point out an important point, most of the not recommended reviews on this manga have not ready the entire series. It's acceptable to stop a manga at any point if you don't like. It's also acceptable to NOT like this manga, just as I don't like everything other people love. ButI think it's important to state that my feeling on this series changed significantly in the last 10 chapters or so. With out spoiling anything, I would say that personally I'd probably rate this around a 6 or a 7 before that point, and give a 8-9 now. So the entire series starts with a "Tomodachi game" basically can you trust your friends. That's at least where the manga starts, but Tomodachi Game's strongest part is that it's not afraid to change it's story or experience. While the game starts with "Do you trust your friends" there a lot of intrigue added into there, including if and who betrayed the group. It's rather brilliant with it's progression, and how the games change. However by the end of the book, there's new grouping and mixtures of parties involved, and each one actually adds a new wrinkle in the discussion of "trust". In addition the games being played start with interesting ideas (though a bit outlandish, most of them making me wonder how did they do all of this secretly). But the later games are much more psychological and those really elevate the strategy and thought that the main characters have to put in. The biggest thing though, is the main character. At first he seems like your typical high school protagonist but Yuuchi is perhaps one of the best main characters I've seen in a long time. There's a lot of trauma in his past and rather than just throwing a "Split personality" on him to explain what happen, the manga just owns him as a dark character. In fact for most of the manga, I would say the reader doesn't know if Yuuchi himself is wroth of trust, and that's a brilliant place for the main character. You're not entirely rooting for him, but you also will find it hard to root against him. What drove me on is more to understand Yuuchi. That might upset people, but I think that's what really drove the score up by two full points. The ending of this manga isn't just good, it is extremely satisfying. Characters make rather important reveals, but they don't betray the context of the previous actions. I would recommend this series for people want a more morally interesting main character. Yuuchi isn't necessarily dark or light, but the best way to describe it is that while you do question all of Yuuchi's friends in this series, you will also question Yuuchi as much. And that feels unique in a way that makes me recommend this to anyone.
Tomodachi game is a perfect, carefully planned story hidden behind a generic plot. When reading the beginning you'll think of another generic manipulator edgy manga but in reality it's so much more well written than it seems. Main character : Yuuichi the MC is nothing special for the first 70 chapters or so, he gives off edgy emo vibes and has the manipulator aura around him but as you continue reading especially when the Adult Tomodachi games start you start seeing the truth, he's a broken boy living for his friends, I won't spoil anything but he's so beautifully written and his conclusion is genuinely oneof the greatest I even put it up there with Lelouch. Side Cast : This category is a little iffy, while the main side cast is great and each have their own fascinating backstories, motivations and carefully written development aside from them the side cast isn't amazing. There are a few exceptions but mostly you won't see great side characters besides the last 2 arcs. Entertainment : A subjective category but for me this was so fun, it was so good I started it in the morning and read it through the whole day finishing it at 3 am, it kept me at the edge of my seat and always wanting more Arcs : Honestly no arc in this manga is bad, sure some are better but all of them are atleast a 7/10 and each are unique making them interesting and compelling to read and the last 2 arcs of this manga were genuinely so perfect it's hard to find arcs that can beat it Overall Tomodachi Game is such a well written and perfect manga that it's difficult to find elsewhere. In the mystery category it's one of the best and in general it's amazing I really do recommend you to read this even if you find the first couple of chapters generic. 10/10
