FAKE is possibly the most romantic series--shounen-ai or not--I have ever read. The story is pretty much two NYC cops falling in love...not much to it. They go on cases, chill after work, etc. Some of the cases themselves get pretty intense, though. Sanami Matoh's art takes awhile to get used to; many characters look alike and the older characters are drawn very rough. But aside from that, her art is unique and her characters are really very beautifully drawn--not scrawny or pretty boy-esque like your typical manga protagonists. The characters are what really got to me--you can't get much more real than them. Dee andRyo are amazing characters, questioning themselves and dealing with their feelings and life. They're so human, and as you read, you can feel their pain. I can't really recommend it enough. If you're a fan of shounen-ai, it's a must. :)
Half-Japanese Randy "Ryo" Maclean is assigned as a new detective to the 27th precinct at the New York City Police Department. His boss pairs him with Dee Laytner, a good-looking veteran prone to impulsiveness. Much to Ryo's confusion, Dee takes an immediate interest in his new partner. In their first case together, Ryo and Dee must take care of Bikky—a young boy whose father was killed due to his involvement in a shady drug trafficking business. Bikky denies having any knowledge about his father's actions prior to his murder. Even so, it is up to Ryo and Dee to protect the boy from those wanting to get rid of him and preserve any evidence he might be holding back. As time goes on and the detective duo works increasingly more together, the distance between them gradually shortens. But could Ryo ever reciprocate Dee's feelings? [Written by MAL Rewrite]
Although am I not all that into shounen-ai/yaoi, I have to say I adoreded this series! FAKE is one of those stories that most people wouldn't think to read. Admitedly, the art is a bit of a turn off since it does not follow the traditonal manga style and can be, at times, very awkward looking. But it really is a shame not many people will pick this story up! Lets start with the plot. Although it has a pretty generic base (two NYPD detectives solving crimes and living life) it really is a lot more in depth then you'd think. Each case the characters solveadds to the story. Some of them introduce characters, some help the reader understand Dee or Ryo's past, and some just help bond the characters together. The love that blooms through out this story isn't your typical shouenen-ai, cheese ball romance either. It takes a long time for the characters to really start something, even starting it out as a bad joke gone array. The story chronicles the struggle of one man learning to come to terms with who he is. Another thing I love about this story is the fact that, although Dee is particularly more dominent then Ryo, there was no defined uke/seme. Both men gave off a strong sense of masuclinity in two very different ways and there was no girly coup-out. Also, the sub romance with Bikky and Carol was abosolutely adorable and gave the non-shounen-ai lovers a nice refreashing pause from the hetic man-on-man hetctic police romance. It helped to show development in the people around Ryo and Dee and showed their effect on the others in their lives. Alright, now lets talk characters. FAKE has a very diverse set of characters. From the hardworking and fatherly Ryo, to the lazy, goofy playboy Dee, to the protective and bratty street punk Bikky, to the sweet and outgoing Carol, and not mention the flaymboyant, jealous, and obnoxious JJ! These characters along with an outstanding supporting cast (I say outsanding because this is one of the few manga's I've ever read where the minor characters have actually stuck with me by name) set FAKE apart from any other manga. Each character grows and changes as the story progresses and they learn a little bit about themselves. Making the story feel more real then any manga I have ever read. The romance between Dee and Ryo was an idea I never thought I could like. It felt strange looking at a yaoi in such a realistic lighr. Normally you see shounen-ai like Gravitation and Loveless where the story is either so ridiculously outlandish that it's hard to relate or that the realistic side of the story is masked in such high amounts of comedy. FAKE does a fantastic job of utilizing comedy but does so in just the right amount that the true story isn't hidden by it. Instead, we are left with with a realistic fiction that, to someone like me who has dabbled in only for yaoi's (all of which were almost purely plot based), it comes as a bit of a shock. But once you get past the fact that it's raw boy love, you start to really enjoy and relate to it. I found myself hanging on to the romance with every thread of my interest. All in all, I highly recommend this story to anyone who likes a good romance (especially if you have a soft spot for yaoi) or to anyone that can relate to the story. In fact, I'd just plain recommend this to anyone who likes a well done story! The art may take some getting used to, but it certainly is worth the time!
Fake, really it's anything but. The story is a-ma-zing and wonderful. I've yet to come across anything half as romantic, yaoi or not! Story- 10 Alot of the time in yaoi manga, once the romance dies down there is no reason is read due to lack of a good plot, but Fake doesn't follow this rule! Since it's a cop/detective thing, you can expect lots of mystery and suspense. Some of the crimes are a bit out of the left field, but if you've ever watched a crime show, this isn't anything new nor does it disturb the plot. The only that did continuously grate my nerveswas that the author of Fake put in two characters from her other manga, where they had supernatural powers or something... Although it was only displayed about twice, the whole 'super powers' thing just seemed a little too much for me, especially coming from a buddy cop manga? But, overall, the story is nice and well thought out. The author made the plot thick and it's one you won't get bored with. Art- 6 The art is definitely not that good, since this manga came out in the 90's and everything. Trust me, when I first picked up this manga, I was a bit appalled. But there are times when the art is okay. It's never so bad that I can't read it, but expect to see the characters in awkward poses and with odd facial expressions throughout. Character- 10 Definitely high up there. I'm actually not annoyed but any characters in this manga, which is really, really rare of me. The two main characters are both well done and the characters around them actually have great depth as well! While some characters are obviously only around for shits and giggles, it's appropriate- if the manga actually went into great detail about the minor characters it would probably be annoying. Enjoyment- 9 If you like yaoi or just romance in general, you'll love it. Also, there is enough action and mystery to keep it from getting too mushy. And also- there is no weeping uke here, which I love! They both have guns, they are both sexy bishies, what's not to love? Overall- 9 A definite 9 that I would recommend to most anyone. You'll be sure to remember it because even though it's not the longest of manga's, it is definitely one of the most well thought out, unique, one-of-a-kind stories.
This is one of my favorite manga, and also my first yaoi. It’s a must for any yaoi fan. Story: Not a very complicated story, not hard to follow but very interesting. It isn’t like most love story, there’s something special between the two main characters that you will love. NY Cops confront a lot of crimes, and Dee & Ryo confront many crimes with personal ties. Just addicting! Art: Sanami-sensei’s drawings are quite rough, and you need some time to get used to them. She progresses as the manga progresses, though I must say the first Volume is the roughest and it fools you. But neverjudge a book by its cover. Characters: Enough characters, and then main two, Dee and Ryo are so peculiar that you learn to love them both! In my opinion, JJ is the most obnoxious character. Being this a more serious manga, that doesn’t fool around much, this dude just ticks me off when he does. I loved it and I already read it twice!
