It carries a sense of freshness at the start, albeit sooner or later moves onto a fixed trajectory - the kind that is predictable in its uncertainty. The initial shock slowly diminishes over the course of this work, even more so upon the realization that characters are basically cannon fodder for author's own convenience. It does contain a certain dose of realism and very much stays loyal to the period which it represents. It is evident author did meticulous research on medieval times. However, that same realism quickly disappears in close-quarter scenes where temporary main characters receive a "supernatural" boost in their skills. A cheaptactic in order to create interest and shallow resonance with the reader, or merely to present the aforementioned in a spectacular fashion before their inescapable doom. Kuji's art definitely feels out of place. Generic with female anatomy that is there purely for untasteful pleasure. It just doesn't sit well with this type of plot. However, it does have its wondrous moments, such as castles, landscapes, and close-ups of facial expressions. Given her involvement in Berserk, one would think she'd have a better sense of how to create a more appropriate cohesion. The work is ridden with various brutalities and torture scenes, tread carefully. It could repel readers immediately due to its semblance with torture porn. Fortunately, it becomes clear that the author has little interest to fulfill some sadistic tendencies and instead aims to accurately depict the horrors of medieval times. She does it more or less successfully; less because at some part it is practically shoved down the readers' throats. Best enjoyed with one eye closed due to its violent nature and particular absurdities; a work that doesn't pull its punches but perhaps has one too many.
Wolfsmund is a dark historical manga set in the early 14th century of Europe (Switzerland). The story revolves around the eponymous fortress in the St. Gotthard Pass which is ruled by a sadistic tyrant. Each chapter deals with characters who for some reason have to cross the pass and who end up getting interrogated by the tyrant. What sets this manga apart is the fact that there's rarely a happy ending for our protagonists. The author pulls no punches to show us just how brutal and inhuman the Middle Ages really were. Woldmund is an amazing, short(37chapters), fast paced and historically accurate manga. It has bloodshed, lots of gore(which is NOT gratuitous, it is rooted in history). Some seriously disturbing scenes, some amazing war tactics, and lots of gruesome deaths. It is not a mindless action manga. It is a war manga about the cruelties in medieval Europe and the fight for independence of Swiss people. Story. 8/10 Wolfsmund is German for Wolf’s mouth. Why this name? Well, this story is set in Europe. Between Germany and Italy lie 3 cantons/states called Uri, Schwyz and Unterwalden. The mountain people here are oppressed and want freedom. And the pathway betweenGermany and Italy is blocked by St.Gotthards pass aka Wolfsmund. It has this fearsome name because it is controlled by a cruel Magistrate Wolfram, who serves the Habsburg dynasty. In the initial few chapters we see how Wolfram catches the rebels, he is cunning, strong and most importantly cruel. The cruelest character in manga history maybe. Then we see the fight of the 3states for creation of Switzerland. Art. 7/10 The art style is okay. It shows the pain, the horror, disappointment and anger in the rebels. The contempt and arrogance of Wolfram is evident too. And when the skulls are split, the scenes are vivid. Characters. 7/10 We aren’t told much history about the characters, the main focus is on the fight for freedom. But what they showed, I liked. Wolfram is so well crafted your admiration for his cunning will soon turn to hatred for his cruelties. The legendary William Tell(who shot the apple), and his son Walter Tell are featured here. The pain of the mountain people made me connect deeply to them. Overall 9/10 I love historical manga like Vagabond, Vinland Saga, GoldenKamuy, Nobunaga Concerto, etc and they are usually set in Japan. But here finally we see something about Europe. This story feels like Berserk + Vinland saga. But with less philosophy and more pain. The pain of the collective people rather than one hero or family. We get to see the war tactics of Knights, Swiss pikemen, and medieval warfare. Castle siege, mangonels, trebuchets, etc. Wolsmund is 30%pain, 30% cruelty, and 40%satisfactory ending!! So 100% fun. You’ll love it if you like seinen historical manga, war manga, action manga. The romance is tragic and the is NO comedy. The theme is dark. I hope you like it. Thank you for reading my review!!
Wolfsmund is not a story you'll see very often and thus is it definitely not a manga for everyone but if gore and cruelty is your cup of tea then this story is something for you. story: 6.5 Wolfsmund definitely does not exceed in its storytelling nor is it what the manga is really about. But the existing story isn't so bad that it would a reason to not read it. The story goes as follows: It's the mid 14th century, Switzerland. We follow a set of main characters who encounter a border settlement, Wolfsmund. Our main characters often don't have the papers to cross border en oftenencounter what I would call the main antagonist of the story: Wolfram. These encounters often lead to the death of members of the main cast and not many survive an illegal pass of the border. Wolfsmund is a story about the civil war and uprising and a sadist who enjoys the suffering of people. art: 7.5 Woldfund doesn't have the most outstanding art but it does have its panels and often good art with gruesome detail makes the story fluent to read and good to follow. Characters: 8.5 For such a story, which is considered a gorefest and mediocre in its storytelling it makes up for with its characters. for such a short story you're emotions certainly take a rollercoaster ride throughout the story. characters that make you fume with rage, or make you tear up and have pity for. enjoyment: 8.5 I really enjoyed this series and it was a fresh ride for me after quite some more, mediocre manga. overall: 7.8
I read this manga years ago, still it leaves an impression on me , first of all its grotesque ,vengeful ,medieval and has a bit of historical significance seasoned with over the top characters, unlike most historical anime this comes closes to have some realism. One thing that will catch your eye is this story has no protagonist, but instead a despicable villain. Most rulers used iron fist to rule and it still persists in some parts of the world today like china and russia. Many might not be able to stomach the contents of this story as well made characters are introduced in thestory only to met a horrible demise. But still it lights the dormant fire of revolution in the hearts of the readers. Kinda reminds me of the Jews who resisted German occupation in the warsaw ghetto. If one dies, the next one who bears the flag might succeed, thats what kept me going to finish this masterpeice
Wolfsmund is a fictional history that revolves around Switzerland and its early ages where it was divided into 3 rural communes, Uri, Schwyz, and Unterwalden. The story is mainly about the Gotthard Pass that connects Switzerland to other countries and is ruled by a tyrant. The story is about fighting for freedom against oppressors. The story has historically valid names for places and most people but also has some folklore and fictional part to make it a dark history manga Wolfsmund belongs to one of that rare historical manga genre that has more actual history but enough fiction to make it interesting. The manga has fineart that compliments the story it shows. The history of the European middle-age is shown as realistically as possible, full of gore and political warfare. Some characters were written very amazingly, but some interesting ones got ridden way sooner than they should have, although it does make it feel a bit disappointing but not boring. The pace does feel slow at the start, but some good characters make it less painful. If you are really into European Middle Ages history or history in general, then this manga is worth the read. Alright, time to dissect and talk about the smallest details of the manga. The manga starts nicely with a slow pace that is somewhat balanced by both a lovable and hateable character called Wolfram, the ruler of Gotthard Pass. His character is fascinating and enjoyable; his methods of interrogation and torture give you a shiver and show the reality of the European Middle Ages. When the synopsis of the manga says dark it is no joke, there are some disturbing and gruesome scenes. The manga portrays the spirit and struggle of freedom against oppressing feudal lords. It tells about how 3 different ideological communes work together to get their long-lost freedom by contacting people from foreign countries. But the problem arises as the Gotthard pass is the only easy way that connects Swiss people to the rest of the countries, and it is highly secured by Wolfram. The manga shows how different kinds of people try to get through the Pass and how Wolfram interrogates them. That's the whole idea for most of the manga, but the last part is a bit different, as it shows the full-on war between the people of Switzerland and their oppressors. The battle is shown almost accurately with minor fiction and gives a satisfying taste at the end. The art could have been a lot better and the story could have been more intense if only the ¾ part was not stuck on Gotthard Pass but looking at the manga not being fully actual historical but somewhat fictional it does make some sense to give a fictional character a bit more background. If you look over all the manga; it sure has its flaws and the biggest being the death of interesting characters way early and the slow pace, but it is set on an actual historical timeline making it more or less bearable as not many manga show actual histories that much correctly. In my opinion, it was a good, satisfying manga that portrayed the European Middle Ages as they were without any filters. I would highly recommend it to any history fans that want a nice and realistic story; it is definitely worth the read.
