THIS. This is my favorite danmei on Earth. If you are a sci-fi fan in any capacity, READ THIS. The BL is a wonderful bonus. HOWEVER, there are trigger warnings for this novel, and I must recommend it to adults only. There are allusions to and attempts of s. assault, heavy descriptions of violence, gore and deaths, and insects. Be warned. Moving on: The romance is on the slow-burn side for the most part in favor of this incredibly unique take on futuristic post-apocalyptic sci-fi, where the Earth's magnetic fields disappeared and the entire planet was been utterly ravaged by radiation. Although humanity manages to surviveand restore a weaker magnetic field after a time, a good 90% of the world population died during the lapse, leaving the smallest pockets of humans still trying to eke out a living with few resources. Worse, the radiation has caused a collapse and re-evolution of the biosphere, where creatures have begun literally melting into each other to create all sorts of genetic hybrid monsters known as xenogenics. And these xenogenics? They find humans... tasty. Enter our MC: a sentient mushroom. Yeah. A sentient mushroom. A xenogenic mushroom, one who lived in the most irradiated, dangerous place on the continent the story is set in. It happens to stumble across a dying human male on a recon mission gone wrong and absorbs him, taking his place as a human-mushroom hybrid. And when the mushroom gains human consciousness, given the name An Zhe, he finds that his mushroom spore, his one and only one, has been taken from him. Cue little mushroom An Zhe embarking on a quest to recover his spore while trying to covertly blend in in to human society in the middle of their desperate battle for survival, while trying not to get shot by the gorgeous in uniform ML, Colonel Lu Feng of the Trial Court, whose mission is to murder any and all xenogenics on sight to protect what little humans remain. But little do they know that the two of them are the keys to humanity's continued existence... It's emotional. It's incredibly well written. The characters are larger than life and I sobbed my eyes out near the end. The bonus chapters are... spicy, a GOOD spicy. PLEASE READ LITTLE MUSHROOM! It is also being serialized as an ongoing manhua as of this review, so if you prefer a visual format full of gorgeous 2D men at every scroll, go for it!
In the year 2020, Earth's magnetic poles disappeared and humankind was nearly wiped out by cosmic radiation. Within the span of a hundred years, living creatures began to mutate and devour each other while the remaining humans, numbering in the tens of thousands, struggled bitterly in their man-made bases. In the Abyss, home to the mutated xenogenics, there lived a sentient little mushroom. Because it had been nourished by the blood and flesh of the deceased human An Ze, not only did it take on a similar-looking human form, but a similar name as well: An Zhe. An Zhe is determined to go to the human base to search for his spore, which had been harvested by humans. Once there, however, he faces the omnipresent risk of discovery and certain death as he tries to keep his non-human nature hidden from the Judges, whose responsibility is to inspect for and eliminate xenogenics like himself. And of all the Judges, Colonel Lu Feng is the most perceptive and merciless—as soon as he determines that someone is a xenogenic, he will execute that person on the spot. But An Zhe's mutation goes undetected by Lu Feng's eyes, and so a tale of humans and xenogenics unfolds... (Source: Peach Flower House)
