He's Dedicated to Roses

The only stories I ever feel like I want to write a review for are stories that really grasp my attention and make me want to read over and over again. So as you can see I really like this story so far. I think the summary given doesn't give the story justice, and also makes it look like just another love story, but the plot is a lot more complicated so i will give you a better one without giving away the whole story. BY school day Choi Ida plays a regular school girl who plays maid to the daughter of a couple who her familyis indebted to. But when her tolerance reaches it's max and her stress level is at 10 she becomes Choi Yodah the toughest fighter around, and a guy of course. Beating up anyone who pisses her off she gets rid of her stress so she is able to face "Princess Mimi" again. But when she meets a handsome guy who is also cool and a great fighter, he brings out the girl in her and it seems he's fallen for her making him look gay. What is she to do when she can't say no to his face? Will she have to reveal her identity and lose her only sense of freedom? I think I may have given out a bit much but it's a lot better than the one thats given! The art is awesome, as the characters are drawn so well. The clothes look awesome and the way Hwang Mi Ri portrays each character gives each of them an individual style that reflects their personalities. The storyline is set at a great pace and is not rushed or leaves holes in the plot. It expresses at of emotions making me laugh out loud and sympathize with the characters situations. I recommend this story to anyone who loves some fighting scenes, some selfish brats that you love to hate, and a story that makes you want to read more and more.

One day, as I scrolled down Mangafox's home page, I took a quick glance at the "most popular manga" sidebar to see if there were any prospective reads out there. Funnily enough, one title I've never heard of topped the ever-so-popular Naruto, and I clicked its name, hoping I would find a glimmering jewel amongst the lackluster rubbish I've attempted to read. Its name: He Dedicated to Roses. I should have known better. What I found was worse than rubbish; not only did it not shine, but it also shoved itself in my eyes, blinding me in all its horrific glory. In contrast to thehype and MAL scoring, I present to you a very disapproving analysis. STORY: 2 He Dedicated to Roses starts off with your typical destitute high-school heroine. Choi Ida is one angry child who serves for her family's financial aiders to protect her parents from being disowned -- in particular, Shin Mimi, the twisted and spoiled daughter. Choi Ida lives a double life to vent her anger without the risk of ever having to endanger her family's brittle position with her own rage. He Dedicated to Roses' story leaves a sour taste in your mouth and heaps to be desired. High school setting? Check. Bullied heroine? Check. Irrationally evil authoritative figure? Check. In no way has this formula never been used before; it's another recycled shoujo premise that should have been thrown out ten years ago. The only reason why the manga lasted as long as it did was because of Shin Mimi's constant threats, and Choi Ida's inability to rise in defence and defiance for herself. It was as though the manhwa author decided that it would be alright to throw in every shoujo cliche available and try to sustain the story using obvious plot twists and even more obvious character reactions. ART: 1 I admit that in comical art such has manhwa and manga, proportions are often blown hyperbolically to lend itself to "style". Yet this isn't "style" that's present in He Dedicated to Roses. It's laziness and a complete lack of anatomical knowledge. Let's begin with one of the most critical flaws of the manhwa: the perspective. It's painfully obvious that the author is in no way a professional artist when you begin to see the same, recurring eye-leveled angles in each and every panel. Not only is there no emphasis on what the reader should concentrate, but it also destroys what little "action" there is (read: totally unrealistic street fights). Action lines are minimal, so a punch really doesn't look like a punch; expressions appear as superficial and almost emotionless because the author couldn't be bothered to study the angles of eyebrows and the mouth; toning is minimal and provides a monotonous read for us all. Though all aspects of the manhwa was weak, I'd have to say the art, along with what's coming up next, takes the cake. CHARACTER: 1 You'd think that a shoujo manhwa that delves into the relationships and interactions of its characters would be shine in such an aspect. Not this one. Every character presented in He Dedicated to Roses is one-dimensional. Every. Single. Character. I kid you not. They all have their motives (if you can call them that), likes, and dislikes, but the author never graced us with the answer as to why. Why did Shin Mimi want to thwart Choi Ida so badly? Why did a handful of male protagonists fall for Choi Ida? And the list goes on. One part that irked me was that the obese student was never seen as someone decent. Why couldn't the author try to provide redeeming qualities, something likable... Heck, nevermind that, something REALISTIC? Oh, forgot we're talking about this manhwa. ENJOYMENT: 2 Couldn't enjoy it. At all. Couldn't even stand it. It simply didn't pull any heartstrings as it intended to, nor did it provide any comedic relief. It fails in every genre it's categorized in. OVERALL: 2 The marriage of story, art, character, and enjoyment simply wasn't meant to be. Each individual aspect was piss-poor, and when brought together gave me an eyesore. If you're hoping for an emotional, enjoyable, and professional read, look elsewhere.

Do you like Cinderella? Do you like gender swap? Do you like drama? Do you like relationship angst everywhere? Do you like jokes? You probably like at least one of those things. This story has all of those. But it's executed terribly. So don't read it. (By the way, this is going to be a long review because I find a lot of fault with this.) Story: Poor. 3. The IDEA is that the main character is a plain girl. But when she's dressed as a boy, she's cute. And guess what she does from time to time (I mean other than has feminine problems)! Right, she dressesas a boy. Apparently, by just reading the summary, that also gives her amazing fighting skills, which is more the translators fault than it is the manga's fault, except that it's true that she only fights when she's dressed as a male. Which is silly. Also stupid. Our poor plain main character is the slave to this chick who everyone calls Princess Mimi because she is the complete opposite of plain and I don't know if this is supposed to be dramatic or funny, but it's neither. The back story between Mimi and our plain female character isn't even really dramatic. All you need to know is Mimi is a stereotypical bad character for this kind of story. All the males like her, all the females envy her and only a few characters see her as terrible. Oh, and the main character's name is Choi Ida, she's so plain I almost forgot. I should also mention that ANY TWIST YOU CAN THINK OF IS IN THIS STORY. So yeah, the back story between these two has to do with Choi Ida's unfortunate family and Mimi's rich one and how one of Choi Ida's parents died and the other is in debt to Mimi's and OMG WHO CARES WHEN WILL THIS END. Okay! So Choi Ida dresses as a boy to vent her anger because apparently it's impossible to do that as a girl. I think she tells you at some point, but it's probably something very silly. Anyway, she chooses the inventive name Choi Yodah, because her last name is just so unoriginal and EVERYONE has that last name, so no one will assume that they are related at all, except everyone with eyes and a functioning brain. Story ho! The rest of this is really uninteresting. Girl/boy meets boys, boys are awed at girl/boy's fighting skill, girls fall in love with girl/boy, girl/boy can't date who she wants because of bully/mistress, mistress is a bitch, mistress gets other boys and some girls to tease/prank/make life difficult for girl/boy-- I know it sounds interesting (to some of you) but this story is executed SO BADLY. Mostly because the author just did not know what she wanted to do with it. Art: Pathetic. 1. You may (or may not) notice the lack of backgrounds in the manhwa. I believe this was on purpose. You do get a lot of gradients, though. And shadows. Every time you switch places, the author TRIES to show you a background, but then is like, 'well, they know where we are, let's not draw that again,' and then we have characters floating around in midair. Sometimes you think you're somewhere, but then the author draws a background that doesn't match. Then you're like, "How did I get here?! How am I here now? Who did this?" For on of the earlier fight scenes, Choi Yodah SAYS you're at the river bank. But you never see the river. Maybe once. But then you see like buildings and grass. That's not a river. Can we have a river please? Also, Fighting? In my Manhwa? It's less likely than you think. The fight scenes are complete with facial expressions that don't match the actions that are going on, awesome attacks that could also not be attacks, and action lines that are too afraid to get close to the action. Yes, this is a prime example of a true fighting manhwa, but only if a true fighting manhwa is synonymous with terrible. Sometimes the action lines are going in directions that don't make sense with the positioning of a character being attacked. Hint: Believable fight scenes are more than just the attacker looking like they're attacking. In the earliest fight in the book, this is seen once when Choi Yodah kicks some grunt. You don't know where, because there's no marking on the guy. I would say it's the face, but he's not bruised there. And his position is still weird, but he wasn't kicked in the gut or the leg or anything like that either. It's just really bad. And the action lines on Choi Yodah's leg is definitely supposed to be as if he kicked upwards, but is he really kicking upwards, or is he just being retarded? You decide! Anatomy is important when drawing human figures. That way faces are on heads and not like, partially off. This manhwa is queen of having faces that aren't on right or fight positions that aren't correct because anatomy dictates it. It is important to have those. We readers appreciate it. Also, facial expressions are kind of helter-skelter in this manhwa, it's KIND of like there's there's a light on upstairs, but it's MOSTLY like everyone has a mental illness and hasn't been diagnosed yet. Like some characters I think want to look introspective, but that comes off looking stupid, and some want to be badass, but that comes off looking stupid and some want to be normal and that works out okay until it looks stupid. Character: Pathetic. 1. Where do I begin. For STARTERS, Choi Ida is the most passive aggressive girl EVER. If it is obvious that she is stronger than Mimi I don't understand why she won't stand up for herself. Seriously, if the story was like: "Mimi says: Do my work for me. Ida says: no. Mimi says: Guys, beat her up. Ida beats the crap out of those guys and tells Mimi to shove it," then the story would be OVER IN ONE CHAPTER. ONE CHAPTER. Instead Ida is spineless. Except she's not because SHE BEATS PEOPLE UP ALL THE TIME. This character is so WEIRD. Now if you HAVE read it, you'll probably bring up the back story thing. But that does really MATTER, does it? If Ida beats up five or six boys and then Mimi decides to tell her mother, that still doesn't change the fact that Ida can beat up five or six guys on her own without help. I mean technically that means that she could threaten to kill Mimi and it would be totally believable. Absolutely believable! WHAT PART OF THIS ESCAPED IDA? Did she think Mimi was going to go tell her mother when Ida is around her all the time? Oh, and then there's Mimi. The girl is an airhead and a bully. WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME THERE WAS AN AIRHEAD BULLY? Maybe it's just because she's rich... OH WAIT NO, THAT DOESN'T MAKE ANY SENSE. Even if you're rich, you still have to come up with better plans than 'Let's make the poor girl suffer' in order to make yourself the party with the least amount of blame. that means you can't be an airhead. Even if the author DIDN'T KEEP PANDERING TO THE READERS by telling us Mimi's plans, we would've still known Mimi is behind everything. Because she's always behind everything. World hunger is Mimi's fault. Child abuse is Mimi's fault. And also anything that has ever happened to Choi Ida that is bad is Mimi's fault. Because she's a bitch. But why is she a bitch? Why does she hat Ida so much? Your guess is as good as mine. Because she's poor? Yeah, that's a good reason. Moving on. Every male character in this series is stupid for reason that can be explained by the following: -Is in love with Choi Ida, but can't admit it because she's average looking -Is in love with Choi Yodah, but can't admit it because he's a guy or something. -Is in love with Mimi and swarms her -Is not in love with Mimi, but doesn't have an explanation for it. -Has no character, no real motives -Is fat, which therefore makes them stupid? Somehow? The ONLY FAT CHARACTER in this series is the one that's creepy, socially outcast, and placed with the plain Choi Ida. I understand that being obese is a liability, but this is a high school setting so there is no liability for being grossly overweight AND this character isn't grossly overweight. Fat people are not all creepy or socially outcast. So why exactly is this manhwa treating this one like that's how it really is? Enjoyment: Dreadful. 2. There are some things that are unique and interesting and new. This is not one of them. It TRIES to be, but honestly with the terrible mix of terrible story + awful characters + that's not art, how could one enjoy reading? I feel like the editor for this manhwa was just like, "this weed is great, also publish this thing in front of me, the covers are colorful and remind me of spaceships." Do. Not. Want. Overall: Pathetic. 1.

I started to read this manwha, as I recently joined the "Gender Bender/Gender Swapping" club. Generally I like mangas better than manhwas, but this peace really doesn't leave you disappointed. Story (8): The story is really good, although in some places it's predictable. The good point is that there aren't too much these typical situations where the persons real gender could be exposed. So it isn't too predictable. The jokes are fine, but not excellent. But still funny. The romance line is fine, I liked it. Art (10): The art is very good, I abolutely adore it! The girls are pretty with big eyes. And the boys are gorgeous, especially theirhair. Also the body complexion is good. In manhwas it's usual that the people are unusually long and the girls have little breasts. Well, the breasts are still small (but here it's appropriate as the girl is supposed to change into a boy), but at least these people arent as tall as Tokyo tower. :) Character (9): The characters are well made. The main evil character ir a girl who's more than typical evil. She's REALLY an evil bi**c! As you read the manwha, you'll hate her wholeheartedly. In my oppinion she's also the brightest character during the story. The main girl is really plain as a girl (you may hate her humility sometimes), but really cool and much more interesting as a boy. The mail characters are all different and that makes them interesting. Maybe you'll like some other guy better than the main lover. It's a matter of taste. I only wanted to mention that the other guys are also worth looking at. Enjoyment (9): I personaaly enoyed this manwha very much. To be honest I read all the 42 chapters in one night. I couldn't just put it down. So you see, the story is very captivating. If you search for comedy, I suppose you would be a little bit disappointed. Of course, there are jokes, and good jokes, but I wouldn't say I laughted during reading so hard that I choked with my sandwich. This isn't the case. Overall (9): To summerize, I liked this manwha very much and I would recommend it firstly for all gender - bender romance fans. As I mentioned already it's a very captivating story with a beatiful romance, with moments where you desire to kill the evil girl, with moments you'll be sad, with moments where you'll laugh, with moments where you'll be impatient and with moments where you'll say "Thanks God it went that way!". I hope you'll enjoy this manwha as much as I did! =)
