As a fan of Spider-man and manga/anime in general, the very short run that this series got was very disappointing, as it feels like it never really got the chance it deserved and was really cancelled just as it was getting started. The art is great, and the new characters, while somewhat plain, had the potential to develop much more down the line. The first (and only) volume was a pretty standard origin story, and it's a damn shame that it'll never go past this. Had the series continued, I imagine it could have been something much bigger and better, but as it stands withall that was released, it's sadly really just mediocre as a standalone story. I can't recommend reading it unless you're a diehard Spider-man fan or just want to be left wanting more that will never come
Yuu's new high school is kind of awful. He's failing his classes and striking out socially. Everything changes when he finds one of Spider-Man's costumes abandoned in an alleyway. At first, it's fun to put on the costume and play hero, but when powerful enemies appear, Yuu quickly realizes he's out of his element. Still, with the real Spider-Man nowhere to be found, the city needs someone to save it... (Source: VIZ Media)
For me personally this is a 10/10. Realistically though, not so much. It's a sadly very short but great story about a looser who is only good at rock climbing who finds Spider-Man's suit in an alley and he now is stuck with the consequences that come with wearing that costume even though he has no powers. The characters are decently written considering how shortlived the series was and it just shows while reading that this was not supposed to be it. Sadly though it's all we got. I saw people calling this story a Spider-Verse ripoff but I couldn't disagree more. The message inSpider-Verse was it's not about who wears the mask, but this manga clearly cares and shows how important the person behind the mask is. All in all though this manga is pretty good for a short read so give it a try if this piqued your interest
»Fake Red« is a Spidey story asking »What if Spider-Man is not Spider-Man« and by doing so, creating one of — if not — the best Spidey story ever! It is a brilliant character study, going to the heart of what makes Spider-Man. The Spider-Verse movies explore a similar idea of: everyone can wear the mask, what counts is how you wear it. The characters are all well written, but I think the series deserves more volumes and a longer runtime would have also benefited the characters to develop deeper. And even though the series got cancelled, as far as I’m concerned, I desperately hopethe story will continue some day.
Big Spider-Man fan, and big manga fan so it was an obvious pick up for me. The art is super cool, and I'm always down for another Spider-Man story, it never really gets old. This story was pretty average, there wasn't anything revolutionary about the plot, characters or even the suit. It's very much a mediocre Spider-Man story, and there are way better comics of his to read that are probably going to make you feel way stronger things than this one. I wouldn't say it's not worth the read though. Pick it up, spend 30 minutes with it (if that) and you're done. It'snot a big commitment and at the end of the day, it's Spider-man! It can't be that bad ever.
The art and character designs are sick, but this reads like an extremely generic, perhaps even caricatural, Spider-Man story. There isn't anything particularly interesting about the two main characters we're introduced to; Yu and Emma are written like archetypal high school kids. Most, if not all of the O.G. Spider-Man heroes and villains in the story feel like they're just there for a cool cameo. It's pretty kids'-show-core and has an extremely predictable plot, with characters white-knuckling adversity through the power of friendship. It can still be a fun read for the silly Spider-Man shenanigans, but don't expect anything decent lol
