Never did I expect that I would cry and be happy at the same time literally in every chapter in a manga. This manga is mainly about an old couple that survived a horrific world war. That’re twenty years later, now reminiscing and remembering the good and the bad memories they’ve had and made. Now what makes this completely different and unique, is how the story goes and it’s pacing in particular. It isn’t that special or really different but overall how it shows you the scenes and how captivating it is. Like really, you’d only understand me if you’ve read the manga. ~ Thoughts ~ Firstand foremost, this really messed me up inside and out. I’ve said this the second time already, yet I’ll say it again. You’d get heavily and emotionally invested with it’s characters and it’s conflicts and overall the story. Which is also really something to take note of. ~ The characters ~ I’d have to say, each and everyone one of them is unique and isn’t shallow. They have depth. They have emotions and interests. They have their likings and whatnot. They’re characters that’re people who felt really real. Like the Young Toranosuke whos’ having the dilemma of Juvenile love. Troubled so heavy in confessing and having the hand of the beautiful Servant Kaoru. The main couple’s power dynamic is very entertaining. Yet this isn’t the only relationship in the story that is unique and wholesome. Some of it was also very bothersome and saddening. The struggles and strong emotions they’ve had. You can’t help but feel and somehow and somewhat relate also. The characters aren’t simple as they’re quite written decently. Enough to respect the story for what it is and how it goes. ~ Illustrations/Art ~ The illustrations aren’t that particularly special or great. But it definitely did a good job on delivering and maneuvering the characters with their emotions. You can really feel the mood and the situation that they’re in. Which makes the story and the manga overall even better. ~ Favorite Scene/Panel ~ Honestly, I’d say everything and every simple yet crucial panel of the story. It really hits different when you’re invested whole heartedly. But that would just be crude and ridiculous. So I might have to pick the one where they hold hands and say the title. There’s still a lot of powerful and impactful scenes that I can show but I can only show this. To also avoid spoilers. .^_^. ~ My Gripes or Critical criticisms/Nitpicking ~ As much as the author did a good job, in my opinion. The story hits you with the same emotional beats, again and again. It’s something to really critically take note of as it shouldn't frequently happen in a story. Because it makes things simple and even bad to others. Like the constant emotional scenes of being worried, sad and crying of the characters. Which is too simple yet still an effective way to make your audience feel emotional. But despite this, it still doesn’t change the fact that I really got hit by it too. Which isn’t too bad. And the author provides a buildup for every conflict and emotional payoff. If you’ve read all of this, then I appreciate it! Would love to know what you think about the review and the story too!
Toranosuke Ibuki and his wife Kaoru née Okouchi have been devotedly in love for what has seemed like their entire lives. Now, twenty years later, Toranosuke is bedridden in a hospital, but still, their love perseveres. Together, the infatuated couple reminisce about days gone by—when he proposed, when they first met, their relationships with those around them, and their blissful married life. Though Toranosuke has always been a bit hard-headed and Kaoru a bit short-tempered, their immense love is shown in the wrinkles on their aged skin and in the unbridled devotion in their eyes. It is so strong that they know they will love each other with the same devotion... even in their next life. [Written by MAL Rewrite]
"War doesn't allow for any emotion" This is one of those hidden-in-the-rough gemstones you'll find every so often, it changes your perception, messes with your emotions, and leaves you crying with a smile on your face. As emphasis, I'd like to say I'm pretty good at holding in my emotions, especially when it comes to storytelling, but this was clearly just not the same for me. The setting revolves around post-war japan, more specifically, a collage of both before, after, and during the actual war. We see the characters we're introduced to get ripped from their lives, see characters grow old, and then, unfortunately never see themagain. There's no real telling who lives or who dies, people you expect to make it through might not, people who seem destined to die survive, it gives you this uneasy feeling that racks your brain the whole time you read it. This format is not lacking structure though, it does a very good job of bringing flashbacks to the present and putting them together. It shows old and new characters with my only qualm being that sometimes it's hard to differentiate who from who but that becomes less and less of a problem as they flush out almost every single character that they introduce. If anything, this manga does war really well. I heard some problems with various manga and how they tackle war. Be it glorified or perhaps too outspoken a lot of people seem to have a problem as some stories reach out to make everyone's impact feel real. I don't think I can see that with this story. Civilians are hurt, people have rough childhoods, and they keep going. They are then torn from their life and brought to war and it feels too cruel; everyone in the story knows that too. It's tough to read, and hell, it's even tougher to imagine being in a scenario like that. TLDR: This manga doesn't ever keep you feeling one sort of emotion, it plays around with you and then delivers decisive blows till you can't stand anymore. There's no certainty, no fairness, and no happy ending in war, it portrays that excellently and is a short-bittersweet must-read. It has it's problems but they are so easy to forget when reading.
Its my first manga review ever so yeah i dont know much but i felt like this manga needs to have a proper review Well Well ! What A Tear jerking ride it has been A beautiful story of a beautiful couple which just makes you happy and sad at the same time The characters are all likeable and every character has his own story that somehow connects with the main couple The Art is beautiful but the thing i liked the most was narration How beautifully the author proceeded with the story he knew when exactly he had to make people laugh and whenexactly make them sad and when exactly to give them happiness through story The side characters were equally as fun as main characters This manga truly shows the cruelties of world that destroy a happy family but yet even after being truly devastated either by emotions or something else some people and their long ago promises still manage to give a ray of hope , a courage to keep moving forward even in the most difficult times also beautifully conveys the love of family for you no matter how bad their actions might look but in the end all they want is your happiness either your parents or your big brother or big sister Final Scores Story 9/10 Art 8/10 Character 9/10 Enjoyment 9/10 Overall 9/10 Please do read the manga i dont know if i managed to convey my feelings completely i dont know much about review stuff but what i want from you guys is to read this beautiful piece of art !
I made an account just to write my thoughts on this specific manga. This is my very first time reviewing, so forgive me if it isn't very informative. This story is about an elderly couple reminiscing about their youth. A beautiful love story that will move you to tears, whether it be happy or sad. I am not educated enough to know about the war and era the story took place in howbeit, I can truly feel the emotion it was trying to convey; how people had been sacrificed and how helpless they can feel. I was drawn to the characters. They had personalities thataren't generic. They have their own stories to tell, which helps them be somewhat relatable. Though to be completely transparent the story jumps from one character to another which makes it hard to grasp what exactly is going on. The art is normal compared to other mangas. However, I gave it a 9 because I think it fits the story very well. I feel like if the art were to be more eye-catching or sparkly then the attention would be less to the story and more to the art. Personally, I think that the art adds to the story and the portrayal of the characters. The bottom line is this manga really moved me to tears. Each chapter just piles up and when I got to the end I found my tissue box empty. I already read it twice in one day. I really enjoyed it! This manga definitely deserves more recognition.
I don't write reviews but I just need to lay out my thoughts and emotion in someway to show the blessing I received by accidentalIy stumbling on this manga, so here it is. I originally thought that this story would be a simple "present to past then to present again" type of romance story. Where we see a cute loving couple reminisce about how they first met which led to the present in some romcom way. Oh was I wrong. Indeed it had a really cute story building between our FMC and MC and it touch a bit on family and the social treatment on poorsbut it wasn't so bad. it convey romcom essentials like a strong girl who scares the MC & funny face from pouts & a clumsy old dad. It gives a very fruitful and lively feel, which of course is most likely the author's intention but it did have some realism later on. Without spoiling, i'll say this: I cried. The author knows how to make lovable characters and families that you can understand their pain and joy, some chapters will just make you smile or feel something. It does cover subject that are quite heavy but that will be up to the readers to get to and when you're there, ohhhh brother. You will stay hook. It may be 26 chapters but they are quite long and will definitely surprise you. At the beginning, it was a little confusing and hard to put two and two together but eventually, by chapter 6 you would be able to figure out the trend. Overall, I would say it is a solid, amazing piece of literature but of course it is no masterpiece. There were some parts that wasn't flushed and fluid or simply plot holes. However, it hit all the points in impacting the readers with even tugging my emotional strings. It was a joyful rollercoaster of a story and I highly recommend check out this amazing manga (with an open-mind).
