There were no reviews for this work so I decided to step up and do it. It is spoiler-free so don't worry. It is a very short chapter. It is entirely related to the original work so it should be read after the original manga. But it is more of a side story exploring more of characters that wasn't in the spotlight on the original work. With that said, as a side story I wasn't expecting much but Yoshitoki Ooima managed to again do the same thing for which I praised her so much on the original series. The author seems to be capable of leading usinto unique emotional situations that do not require a setting being built over a long number of chapters. As in, you read a certain chapter on the original series, cry, and then move on to another chapter that explores another side of the story and in that small frame of 20 pages she makes you cry again. And on this side story she made me cry again on that small number of pages. Her story telling is one of my favorites. The drawing art is as good as it should be. If you have read the original manga and liked the art you will like the art here. To conclude, if you have read the original series I highly recommend this little bit of extra. You won't be disappointed. My motivation for writing this review is that at the time I'm writing it, it is scored as 7.65 at myanimelist.net, which seems to me to be a little harsh. It should be a minimal 9, if you consider what this extra is, what was it's proposal and what it achieved. When I take that into consideration I give it a 10.
Yaeko Nishimiya is a cold-hearted single mother tasked with raising Shouko, her daughter, who has impaired hearing. Though Shouko's disability is a cumbersome one, Yaeko remains determined to raise her daughter into an independent young woman—no matter what parenting tactics she must use. [Written by MAL Rewrite]
First and foremost, I didn't want to read this chapter because it was released after the anime adaptation, and I figured it wouldn't be worth it. But that is not true; it is definitely worth your time, and I am glad I changed my mind. This brief but unique story is about Yaeko Nishimiya (Shouko's mother) and how she developed, aided Shoka, and overcame numerous challenges over time. I enjoy how Ooima Yoshitoki can convey numerous characters' emotions with a small amount of words. Overall, this special manga is a must-read if you like the Koe no Katachi series. Itfeatures beautiful visuals, an emotional plot, and good character design, for which I award it a 10/10.
A special one-shot (?) that further develops the character Nishimiya Yaeko (Nishimiya Shouko's mother). Here we have a flashback of Yaeko before the events of the main plot. After that, we have a moment that takes place during the events of the main plot where the Nishimiya family is gathered celebrating Yaeko's birthday. After this moment, we have a follow-up to what happens after the main story, and in it we have a bit more character development. In short, it's a chapter that gives us a feeling of anguish and grief over a situation where words don't need to be spoken to understand the weight the characteris feeling. In fact, it's an experience that shakes anyone, and that's why I can't help but rate this work highly, because even though it's short and without much new information, it brings purpose and reflection. Appreciate your mother while you still have her.
