Ceres: Celestial Legend

Ceres is one of Watase's most popular works and, in my opinion, her best. It's a much more mature story than her others, dealing with themes of sexuality and violence (often a mixture of the two), but as my mother would say, it is tastefully done. Probably 16+ should read this, not because of content, but because the themes are very complex and require a more mature understanding of sex and violence. Besides the 'parental disclaimers,' Ceres is a beautiful love story and a sci-fi/horror thriller with social commentary and humor. The main storyline is that Aya, on her sixteenth birthday, is possessed bya spirit named Ceres. To make matters worse, her family wants to kill her to keep Ceres from being unleashed. So Aya must find a way to rid herself of Ceres...or at least that's how the story starts. There are fourteen volumes in all, so the story has time to become really complex (but not like Pirates of the Carribean 3-I-have-no-idea-what-is-going-on-complex). It's a long series, but it's worth the time (and money if you buy all the volumes like me).

Ayashi no Ceres is an anime/manga created by Yuu Watase, one of the most popular manga artist in Japan. To refresh your mind if you haven't already Ayashi no Ceres is about a girl Aya Mikage who has the power of the celestial maiden and was known as the unlucky one in the Mikage family. Aya was a descendent of the actual celestial maiden Ceres and Ceres was known as an enemy to the Mikage family for many generations. During every generation there was a girl that had the power of the celestial maiden but everytime when they reach the age of 16they were assasinated. Aya managed to survive but now she has nowhere to go....... This anime was quite fast paced, there was absolutely no areas in which included boredom. There was quite alot of action that includes violence, blood, and other inappropriate measures. So this would be suitable for teens and up. The story was quite well ploted, i couldn't find much flaws in the story. Although it was quite interesting, it's a pretty long series so sometimes you would think its a drag. However, I think it's still worth watching it. I loved the art in this anime, it so detailed, especially the emotions. The emotions are so real, it seems like your actually playing a role in the anime. The character were very well done, although i thought Tooya and Aya were quite stubborn and her twin brother Aki is just too pure and innocent. Otherwise I think it would be quite nice. Overall it's fairly good, and if you like Fushigi Yuugi, there is a very high chance that you would like Ayashi no Ceres. Oh and there is also an anime for this if I haven't mentioned this before. Ayashi no Ceres is a refreshing soujo made by the amazing Yuu Watase, the queen of fantasy shoujo. One of the strongest points of the manga is the main character. Aya Mikage, is a 16 year old, quite mature for her age, very relatable, funny and strong. Doesn´t hesitate to fight and investigate. Not like Fushigi Yuugi where I couldn´t stand Miaka. Aya is pretty much your average teenager, very open about her sexuality as well which is refreshing for a Shoujo, where most main characters are completely clueless teen girls that are scared of even holding hands with the boy. The lore is INSANE. Veryrich and engaging, apparently it is based in a local legend. Not going to spoil it, but if you are interested in japanese folklore and religion, this is your manga. The pacing is perfect, you can read the entire manga in a couple of days and will leave you with a taste of wanting more. The art is superb, Watase lineart is one of the best that you can find in the manga industry and the clothing desing and backgrounds are excellent. The main lead is quite unique, I have to say, has a magnetic and mysterious personality. What else can I say, Ayashi no Ceres is the best work that Yuu Watase has ever done, worth a read if you want to try something different. Expect some tears, laugh and surprises.
