Yurara is a very cute story, that is very unique and inventive. The writing was spot on and there was a lot of drama, excitement, romance and tons of comic relief. The art is not the greatest I've seen. It looks similar to early manga artwork from th 80s, but that type of drawing seems to add to the atmosphere of the story. Another issue is the repetativeness of the plot line, and it is very short (only 5 volumes). This makes the story feel a little rushed and can limit your attachment to the characters. The whole concept of the manga is about personal confidence, and being who you are. The three main characters each grow and change throughout the story and all learn something valuable about themselves as a person. Yurara is a good read. After your first time reading it, you should go back and read it again. If Yurara was longer and wasn't so repetative, it would have bin a perfect ten.
Yurara Tsukinowa is a quiet girl who can see spirits and sense their emotions. Not wanting to seem abnormal, she hides her secret until she meets Mei Tendo and Yako Hoshino, two guys who use their spiritual powers to ward off vengeful spirits. The dormant guardian spirit in Yurara arises and a strong-willed beauty with the power to release souls emerges! (Source: VIZ Media)
TL;DR: Supernatural shojo with a solid premise and fun characters that unfortunately just falls flat for me. L;DR: Yurara was one of those manga advertised in the back of my old shojo beat volumes. It's honestly pretty much exactly what it says on the tin. Girl who can see ghosts is 'possessed' by a spirit, gets mixed up with the two hot guys in class who can also, surprise surprise, see ghosts. Hijinks ensue. I truly like the main character, Yurara, and I thought the art was fun, especially in Yurara's many faces (lol), but that doesn't help much with the weak character drama and the lackluster story. There's nice moments for sure, but just not enough for me to leave the manga with a positive feeling. I also really didn't like the love triangle, nor how it was resolved. The character motivations just didn't really make sense. Not bad, not great.
