So today marks the day I finally finished reading Akuma no Riddle. I'm Taking this from the perspective of someone who has both watched the anime and read the manga. And I can say without a doubt that the manga portrays it better (as to be expected). The character development in the manga is very well written, and I felt that the characters and their personalities all helped to pull the story together. But while most of the characters was written really well, I do got a couple complaints. One being that While Haru Ichinose and her personality was very well written, it really doesn't giveany explanation as to why she got the scars. And then we got Azuma Tokaku which while also being well written, doesn't get much of an explanation to her background. And I feel like the manga could've been much better if they would've just spent another couple chapters to build up their characters as a whole. But if someone asked me if they should read this, I would recommend this manga.
At the elite boarding school Myoujou Academy, there exists the special "Class Black." Disguised as a normal class, it serves one purpose: assassination. At the center of Class Black, one student is the target while the others are assassins who are all itching to make the kill. The student who successfully assassinates them will have any wish of theirs granted, but they only have one chance to do so; expulsion awaits those who miss their mark. Azuma Tokaku, an apathetic assassin-in-training, finds herself transferred to the latest Class Black with 12 other girls. One girl sticks out from the rest—Haru Ichinose, a cheerful girl who is idealistically insistent on making friends and graduating. To little surprise, the students discover that Haru is indeed the target and begin to plan their assassination. However, Azuma feels a growing fondness for Haru and is drawn to a different course of action. Now, for the first time in her life, she has found a cause to fight for. [Written by MAL Rewrite]
personally, i like the series better than the manga but that's probs just cuz i watched it first lol, one thing that i found myself very uncomfortable with is that they do not look like adults AT ALL, especially in the series. yet some parts are so obviously coded to mature even if it does not explicitly show it. pretending that all of that wasnt a problem, the story was actually nice for a change and i really enjoyed the main character, i love dull characters who have a soft spot for someone. i wouldve wished they explained stories a bit better but overall? ireally liked this manga/series.
On a personal level, this is a 10. But objectively, this is truly about a 7 at best, as far as everything goes. Characters were by far the strongest point. Even those who did not get a lot of love from the limelight still got good characterization and fleshed out storylines. However, the tight restraint on their appearances and interactions ultimately feels like a lot of the character potential is lost. It is even more unfortunate that this is how it has to be due to the nature of this yuri survival game. I'm not 100% sold on the yuri, since even though the mangahas more than the anime, it still feels lacking for the most part. Overall, I did enjoy this a lot more than other people I recommended this to. It had a lot of potential, even if it ultimately felt unused for the most part due to constraints of plot.
