This manga takes place a year before the events of Devil May Cry 3 the video game. Which confused me when I learned that, since Vergil is doing the same thing he was doing in game and the second volume ends on a specific scene right from the video game. ah well, you shouldn't always expect PERFECT continuity when it comes to other forms of media attached to a franchise. Keep in mind, this review is based off the official Tokyo pop translation. NOT the raw translation you can find on the Devil's Lair website. So translation isn't really good... The dialogue for Dante is a complete contrastfrom his personality in the video game. Personality wise he's closer the DmC reboot Dante people hate so much. His attitude is over the top and he comes across like a foul mouth douchebag instead of the likable smart mouth from the game. At least the raw translation fixed that, I guess Tokyo Pop was trying to make him Edgier? Vergil is pretty much the same even though he has a couple lines that seem to have the immature smart mouthing Dante should of had. The art is Amazing! I have no complaints about the artwork! The manga artist did a good job keeping it close to the art from the games. As I mentioned the story takes place a year before DMC3 the game. We still have Lady making a couple appearences and some new characters. The manga does go a little further back into Dante's past, so if you wanted to explore that this manga is definitely worth picking up! Apparently there was going to be a third volume (Code 3: Lady) but sadly the manga artist quit the project and it was canceled. I assume it would have focused more on Lady's character, backstory, and how she got started on her journey...but we'll never know. If you can get over the botched translation, this is a manga I recommend to any devil may cry fan! I love the games and I had fun reading this. This manga being out of print it might be a pain to find physical volumes, but I found my copies on ThriftBooks for less than $5. Or if you'd rather read the raw translation read it on the Devil's Lair. If you can't find the right links just message me and I'll give them to you.
It's been 2000 years since the rebellion lead by the Dark Knight Sparda, a demon who turned to the side of good. The gateway to the Underworld has been sealed and humans are now safe from an invasion of the demon world. Dante, Sparda's son, makes a living by eradicating demons. His first job is to find and bring back a girl named Alice. But what awaits him when he storms the inn where Alice is being held? And who is this man walking around town who has the same face as Dante? Twin brothers born of the Dark Knight Sparda and the human woman he loved are now grown men, but each walks a very different path in life. What is Dante's twin, Vergil's, goal? The violent story of two fated brothers continues... (Source: MU)
A pretty mediocre and forgettable entry into the DmC franchise, it has solid enough art but isn't properly canon and mostly feels like a throwaway. I liked the Alice in Wonderland themed visuals even though they came out of nowhere. I'd actually really love that sort of vibe to make it into one of the games but considering how disposable this entry is I doubt we'll ever see Dante visit a dark and twisted Wonderland lol. It's biggest weakness I would say though is that it feels incomplete and rushed. Maybe if it was longer and fleshed out the concepts in it then it would bebetter but it is so short and so barely relevant to the main games.
