I wonder why there isn't any review for this one yet. Well. I love the art. She always brings a totally different experience of art to her manga, and I adore that. Some people may be put off by it at their first read, but after you get used to it, the beauty shows. The storytelling is also a strong point. Fluid. This is quite a depressing manga, and the mood was set right from the very beginning. Since this is one of her later works, improvement is pretty notable compared to, say, Copernicus no Kokyuu (this one's still good nonetheless.) Pretty hard to describe in words, but in Double Mints you can see that she rolls the story rather than symbolizing it. This is a deliciously dark read. Highly recommended. I reread this twice. Other than for understanding the story deeper, there's something from this manga that lures you in. Perhaps it's the elegance.
Mitsuo Ichikawa was once at the beck and call of his frightening classmate who was also named Mitsuo Ichikawa. Drawn together by the bond of their name, one became like a servant to the other—and this odd relationship managed to survive the many years they were apart. One day at work, Mitsuo receives a chilling call, and the familiar voice of his namesake greets him with a confession of murder. When one Mitsuo kills a woman in a fit of drunken blindness, he calls on the other to help him get rid of the evidence. The pair are reunited as accomplices and once again become unavoidably entangled with each other—but now the stakes are much, much higher. With the past coming back to haunt Mitsuo, the two must navigate a dangerous world of drugs, gangs, and the consequences of what they have done. [Written by MAL Rewrite]
To read the story, you first have to get that this is a fucked up story and pretty much the embodiment of depressing messed up shit. The story is pretty unique and smooth flowing, but it'll definitely make you doubt your ratings on this manga. Even so, I'd still have to say that this is one of Nakamura-sensei's best works. The art is superb as usual; expressions are able to bring the word bubbles into a whole other level of deepness. Character wise, I, myself, hated them, mostly because I thought they were stupid, but thats just me. Although at the end Nakamura does explain wherethey were inspired from so it makes sense. Overall, the story is great. It's definitely not a simple read and does convey deeper thoughts. So dont be quick to judge and just take in the ending.
