Shounen Shoujo Hyouryuuki is a story about clueless youth, and their problem. back when we’re young, we always think that our problem is the hardest thing that we ever encountered, we always feel occupied by even such a simplest thing. everyone has their own circumstances which they want to overcome. and this manga is example of how devastating even a simplest problem is for youth. Story:9/10 even when the story of each student sometimes is simple, the execution of it is not. we’re forced to see their problem in their point of view, in which to be honest, not as simple as we think. we see alot of weird delusion, imagination, trauma, and anxiety that each students have. all of the students way of thinking are complete delusion and imagination to the truth that they always want to avoid. they started to create a happy imagination, because they’re afraid to move forward, to be straighforward, to be honest with themselves, and to realize that this is something that they shouldn’t do. this is being a youth is all about, to overcome fear and breaking the comfort zone that they reside for a long time. all of the story just kind of hit us with realization that not everything is pretty, even for youth. Art:8/10 the first Usamaru Furuya’s works that i read was Jisatsu Circle, the story of Suicide Club. and the artstyle is very entertaining, it may not as surreal as Shintaro Kago’s, but it sure really depicting what it needs to be. his artstyle when creating all those imagination are very well done. Character:9/10 each of the 9 students have different personality and different problem. from the simplest one such as a girl whose anxious about his weight, to the harsh one such as traumatize girl with her trusty wand. i love all of them because it reminds me on how silly a highschool student can be, and how some of them really through something that they shouldn’t have in their age. the older you are, the more you realize how nice and easy it is to be able to complain about anything, and not putting any facade just because you’re adult. Enjoyment:8/10 it’s a refreshing read about highschool student and their problem visualized with abnormal imagination, something you not see everyday. Overall:9/10 it’s a nice read, it’s short, but each chapter gives us a lot of message, especially for me. it tells us that, not everyone has a same mindset as you, we face problem everyday, but not everyone can easily overcome that problem. and sometimes, the problem is not about the problem, it’s about how we reacted to the problem. and these student sure are clueless about their own problem.
A collection of standalone stories written by both Furuya Usamaru and Otsuichi. The stories all revolve around the common troubles that teenagers go through, whether it be falling out with a friend, being bullied, or dieting. (Source: MU)
This is a weird manga, that's for sure. I would say that the main genre of this manga is "Surrealism". It is clear that the mangaka has been influenced by surrealist art and thought. The manga is a collection of somewhat independent short stories, all of containing strange, neurotic and kind of freudian dream/hallucination sequences. While the mind-fuck of this manga is interesting to watch, it's hard to know what to make of the actual stories. Sometimes it's like they don't really lead anywhere and that they are just weird instead of being actually good. Often I didn't know if what I read was funnyor sad (it was probably both). This is an interesting quality but it gets in the way of the manga being moving. Still, it varies from story to story, some of them are better. If you're going to read this manga, don't expect an overwhelming story-line. Expect gorgeous art and surrealism.
