now Im not really into BL manga or anime, mainly because I'm a straight dude who likes big burly men fighting each other, which sounds gay but it really isn't. Now onto topic, our dining table is a Shounen ai, BL, Yaoi what ever you want to title it manga, it follows a man who is bad at eating with others named Yutaka, he meets two brothers named Minoru and Tane and begins to eat with them. out of all the fujoshi garbage in the world, our dining table stands out to me as a truly human and relatable manga, its heartwarming and a joy toread from start to finish, it's a feel good manga in every sense and I had a blast reading it, it doesn't feel like its making a big deal about them being gay, it feels like a romance done well just they happen to be dudes, it was a great read start to finish. The characters are lovely, each of them feel relatable and human, they all share what feels like a bit of me inside them and it's really touching to see, I specifically enjoyed seeing the growth of Yutaka throughout its short length, The art was nice albeit a bit rough at times other then that excellent! I found myself thoroughly enjoying this manga and think its a series definitely worth giving a shot, even if your not into bl, I think this is a great read nether less.
Yutaka Hozumi has always been bad at eating in the company of others, with people complaining that his presence makes mealtimes boring and food taste bad. While eating lunch alone one day, he is suddenly approached by a hungry little boy to whom he hands over the onigiri from his meal. When the boy's older brother shows up, Yutaka is introduced to Tane and Minoru Ueda—a pair of siblings with a significant age gap. When Yutaka meets the brothers again, they ask to learn how to make his special rice balls; little Tane insists that they were the best he had ever eaten. Succumbing to Tane's adorable pleas and his own fear of the intimidating Minoru, Yutaka agrees to become their cooking teacher. As lessons morph into meals, Yutaka and the siblings grow closer—but Tane and Minoru's close bond draws out uncomfortable memories for Yutaka, and there are feelings lurking beneath the surface of these group meals that were not initially apparent. I LOVED this manga. I'm shocked to see it doesn't have any reviews here yet. It is pretty hard to find - I had to read the second half of it from the gallery of a BL Facebook page, haha - but it is there! If you're looking for a wholesome and SFW shounen ai manga with a true love story, this is it! This is just... so. fucking. cute. You can really feel the love that blossoms between the main characters. Minoru's little brother (Tane) definitely made the story for me - the interactions between the protagonist (Yutaka) and Tane, and how that made Minoru fallin love with him even more... ugh. My heart was MELTING. They're the perfect little family. The story is just so gentle and so genuine. The mangaka really creates a world you never want to leave - the art is so beautiful, there isn't a single unlikable character in the whole manga, and it's just so. damn. WHOLESOME. There seem to be quite a few shounen ai that revolve around food for some reason (lol), but this one really works. I couldn't put it down, but at the same time, I never wanted it to end. Speaking of the ending, though... I personally couldn't have asked for a better one. I love it. For a lot of reasons. But no spoilers! I'll definitely read this again ASAP so I can give a more in-depth review, but for now I just wanted to get this out there and say that if you're considering this one, read it!!
I can see what this manga was going on. A wholesome portrayal of two non-conflicting adults and one adorable child. The problem is, it feels empty. There is a lack of any “meat” to the story. The manga feels more like an outline of the content than the actual final product. A quick, fleeting moment without much context before and after it, just hastily thrown together. Sure, you could argue that the wholesomeness enough is what makes this great, but I wouldn’t value the one here that highly. It certainly is no Yotsubato. The art is pretty good, I’ll admit that, and it’s mainly thanks toit that the main appeal of wholesomeness works at least to some degree. However, the manga still goes by without any real memorable moment, ending as suddenly as it begins. Is the notion of this being a consensual relationship between two males a.k.a. this not being a terribly cliché BL enough for the manga to be considered great? Maybe within the genre, but for a more general rating, I’m sorry but my standards are a bit higher than that.
Honestly yall, I normally never say this much about gay manga but this nearly made me friggin emotional!!! I just felt so sorry for the Yutaka character because literally, his adoptive family just treated him like a piece of crap and his adoptive brother just wasn't at all helpful to him. Man saying this makes me wanna hug Yutaka 😭😭😭😭😭 It was great to see Yutaka being made to feel like he was part of Minoru's family. Urgh my heart is making me nearly a mess here seriously lol! Yutaka and Minoru were so sweet together ❤ If you're sick of the forced Yaoi sex manga that's out thereand badly need wholesomeness right now, this is a definite read to consider folks! Also have a box of tissues beside you if you're an easily emotional person!!
I bought this manga used from a local shop, I didn't even read the back. The front just had its own energy. You can feel the wholesomeness radiating from it! The art in this is wonderful and soft. Just looking down at the pages makes me smile. It is very reminiscent of 2000s slice of life shoujo manga. The panelling is well thought out and flows with the eye nicely. I enjoy the art. Although it is not unique in anyway it is still good. Art doesn't need to be unique for it to be enjoyed and add to the story. The art is simpleand sweet just like the story. The story is wholesome and tugs on your heart. Two boys meet due to one chaotic little brother, food and found family, queer writing with heart, grief, and the struggles of being adopted. All of these are to be found in this manga. The story is contained in one thick volume. It is about as long as three standard volumes. The story is fleshed out and helps give you a better understanding of the characters and their feelings. It feels very true to life without being too saddening. The characters are defined and relatable. All in all I really enjoyed this manga! I 100% recommend to anyone looking for a wholesome slice of life romance!
