So it has to be said this story is an all too frequent example of a manga author who for reasons best known only to themselves decided to wreck their series with an incomprehensible and thoroughly unsatisfying ending. Sadly, one that goes well beyond a few bitter 'ship' fans that ultimately saw this series being widely deplored both domestically and overseas. That distaste after reading is all the more bewildering given for most, the author delivers an outstanding story of thoughtful and entertaining character development - quite possibly some of the most interesting within this genre. There is a wide main cast with diverse and complexpersonalities threaded through with an interesting enough plot that doesn't overshadow the characters. For this, the series scores well along with some cute art and genuinely funny story telling at times. If you're reading, then by all means do carry on as the story is still enjoyably in the most. Just steel yourself for a disappointing end that will make you question the point of 100+ chapters and some frustrating angst in contemplating what the author was thinking when he decided to wrap things up as he did. That said, there is a small saving grace in the epilogue released post completion. Something done almost to satiate fans and one wonders given it's only a few pages if it was really only done in a vain effort to ensure fans woldn't completely abandon the authors future works.
Kobayakawa is an antisocial student who lives an extraordinarily ordinary life. His only talent is painting portraits, which he often does to relieve pent-up anger. One day, he meets a pretty and popular girl named Hoshino who has a secret that nobody knows except for her and her childhood friend. That is, until he stumbles upon it too by chance. Her friend had been putting make-up on her every day. Now it's his turn to keep this secret and help maintain her social life! (Source: MU)
I binge read this manga in 2 days. So, my experience of it is not the same as the ones who read it weekly. Overall, I appreciate this manga, but I can see all his flaws. The author lost his way at a part of time but there are still really good moments, the end of the Gal-4 eyes relationship and the end of the baseball guy story. I can say that this 2-side story were better than the end of the MC story. This manga have flaws but I still enjoy it enough to make this review to not forget it ! Characters : 6/10 MC : youthink he grows but the mangaka don't think so. And that is how you end up with this ending to prove that yeah, the MC had evolved from chapter 1. FMC : I don't really appreciate her and she has very little character evolving. Gal Kanou is a yes and well-done characters with good development. 4 eyes girl : At a moment in the manga the mangaka thought of doing of her not just a classic girl but a girl with a superiority complex but it's just like for 1 chapter and doesn't go anywhere after that. But because of that I really do not appreciate her. The friends along the way are very cool, especially Takahashi. Very good part with his side story ! Story : First part 7/10 Second part MC 6/10 Second part Manga 7/10 The manga trait homosexuality I think pretty well. There is a side story with a character who is gay and it's well made, I think. For me this manga has for me 2 endings. There is a first end at the end of the school trip (around chapter 60) and the classic end. And after the first ending there is 2 different plots going on. The MC plot and the manga plot. Two different things and I kind of prefer the second one (prefer the characters there). It's kind of the first time that I feel this much that there is 2 story going on and they don't even meet up at the end. Not even in the chapter bonus (106.5 omake). The first part is okay quite well done but the school trip as too much things going on that's where there is one of the best scenes even if this scene made me dislike the MC. The final ending gives a lot of critics when it came out. But when you binge read it it’s kind of make sense. But even if it makes sense it makes you feel conflicted feeling and I don’t think the bonus chapter really help his case that much… But I still enjoy the story before this ending. This show still made me tear up a little bit on the last arc (because of the gal and glasses girl chap 102). And my heart goes pounding sometimes but still very little for a manga this long... And at a part in the manga, I really hate the MC and after that the FMC. Art : 7/10 I love gals and I appreciate how he drew them. It's more realistic to the classic gal mode than the new one so it's cool to see it ! The art style is kind of normal, like there isn't many extravagant scene but there are still some pages that marked me for the composing and how pretty they were. (chap 102 page 14) Enjoyment : 8/10 I still had a good time reading it and I would love to read it again with just the best part (gal part and baseball part) or with a little bit more satisfying ending. In the end 7/10, a mid-manga that I enjoy more than I thought I would !
