This is the one-shot that eventually spawned the longer series of the same name. As far as I'm aware, the one-shot is identical to the first chapter of the official manga, but I may be mistaken; this review treats it as such, so I apologize for any confusion and will gladly revise this if anyone knows of a different chapter for this title. Story, 7: This is reminiscent of Watamote, with a socially awkward girl as our secondary protagonist. The main protagonist tries to help her get over her fear of social interactions, which leads to several comedic moments. Art, 7: It wasn't anything particularly special, but I enjoyed it. The reaction panels were pretty amusing. Characters, 7: We don't really get to know much about any other characters aside from the two leads, but both themselves and their relationship gets marginal development throughout the relatively short read, which I appreciated. Enjoyment, 7: It definitely sparked my interest in the main series, but I plan on reading that upon its completion. It had some decent humor, and I liked the premise of the plot. Overall, 7: For anyone unsure about leaping into the main series, this would be a suitable place to start and gauge your interest/enjoyment of the basic plot. Comedy fans looking for a quick read would also probably like this title.
Tall, slender, and elegant, Shouko Komi is admired as a refined beauty within her school, alluring anyone who crosses her path. However, beyond her graceful appearance lies a shy and timid girl who is terrible at communicating with others. Due to her poor social skills, Komi finds it challenging to make friends and has been left all alone her entire life. After a bizarre first encounter, high school student Shigeo Tadano deduces that Komi struggles with talking to people; however, she is determined to change. Seeing Komi's resolved and genuine nature, Tadano decides to help her achieve this goal. With Tadano lending her a hand, will Komi finally learn how to communicate? [Written by MAL Rewrite]
Talking to new people and making friends when one feels unsure of themselves often feels awkward and difficult, and most people have at least one experience where they have felt out of their depth socially. Komi-san wa Comyushou desu takes a look at a girl learning to interact with others despite her initially cold and intimidating appearance. Often this sort of interaction is made into a comedy through cringe humor, something like Watamote for instance. Komi-san takes a different path by making the humor based around the main character, Komi, clearly work to fix her problems when dealing with people rather than remaining stony and stand-offish.Even in this short one-shot, the audience watchers as the other character, Tadano, comes to understand and communicate better with Komi. The humor value is more looking at how far Komi still has to interact with others well, even if she does incrementally better with each encounter Due to being a one shot the story canβt do much more than showcase the potential of the story, but does manage to show progress and change, which I counted as a plus and definitely made me more interested in the longer story. The art is fairly average, save for the occasionally chibified or other stylization used to show how characters feel or the aura theyβre meant to give off during the story. Overall, this one shot does itβs job of creating interest for the main story, and provides a reasonable way for the reader to decide if they are interested enough to commit to a longer story.
This is the oneshot that-- oh, everyone already said it. Overall, as its own thing it's pretty neat. The story has a good theme about being bad at communicating (both at not being able to read the mood or just bad at talking in general) and manage to execute it in a nice and comfy manner, making it easy to access for everyone. The two characters are also likable and have a pretty nice combo/synergy between them. Overall, it's great and I want to see more of it, and there lies the biggest problem. That already exist. Komi-san is its own long-running series now, andwhile I can't say that a bad ending which will ruin everything isn't out of the question yet, I'm already at chapter 300+ and I can confidently say that nothing of that nature happened so far. There is just no reason why you would want to read this over the series from a story perspective. The oneshot is pretty much just the early chapters of the long-running one, so you don't have to worry about missing out stuffs. The characters in here are also very limited compared to the much larger cast we'll see in the show. And there's also a huge limitation on how much Komi-san can develop in a oneshot compared to the 370-ish chapters we currently have. I guess you could read it as an alternative start to the series, or like the prototype version which it kinda is, but I don't think that's something that will attract a lot of people unless they're that bored. Plus, I think Komi's design (more specifically her sillhoute) improve a lot in the series so there's that. TLDR: It's pretty good, but the series exist and it's better and longer.
