ENG: "Chuukan Kanriroku Tonegawa" is a comedic spin-off of Kaiji, focusing on one of the most charismatic characters from the original manga, Tonegawa. The series has its strengths, managing to humanize and caricature a villain who was intimidating in Kaiji, exploiting absurd and comical situations with good timing. Some gags work effectively thanks to the contrast between his authority and his personal clumsiness, so it's likely to elicit a few smiles. The problem is that, as a standalone series, it lacks narrative weight or real tension. Unlike the original manga, there are no life-or-death stakes, no strategy, no deep development; everything revolves around repetitive humor and the protagonist's exaggerated antics. This makes it occasionally funny, if you enjoy its type of humor, and it's not so long as to become tiresome. There are some references to the original manga; we even see how they planned certain games we saw in Part 1. However, it's an extremely lighthearted series in tone compared to the impact and depth of Kaiji, Akagi, or Kurosawa. The artwork, despite not being by the original author, manages to maintain Fukumoto's style. The narrative is episodic and heavily reliant on gags, which can become repetitive for those looking for more than jokes and caricatured characters. Overall, "Chuukan Kanriroku Tonegawa" works as a humorous spin-off. It's easy to read and can be entertaining, but it's somewhat insubstantial in terms of story, tension, or development. It's only recommended for those who enjoyed the original Kaiji and want to see Tonegawa in absurd situations, with a very specific and particular sense of humor.
Chuukan Kanriroku Tonegawa is a spin-off of the Kaiji series, which follows Tonegawa, the right hand man of Kazutaka Hyoudou, the president of the Teiai Corporation and owner of numerous gambling tournaments. After Hyoudou is getting bored with his life, he orders Tonegawa to organize a so called "game of death" as it is his and his subordinate's job to keep the president in a good mood. Tonegawa must cooperate with his subordinates in order to make the president happy and what follows is a humorous story of his interactions with his subordinates and other characters of the Kaiji series. Included one-shots: Volume 2: 1-nichi Gaishutsuroku Hanchou Volume 5: Tonegawa vs. Hanchou
