This is going to sound like a downside, but I mean it in a good way: there's nothing particularly special about this story. Its plot is completely quotidian. It progresses approximately like you expect. And that's exactly what I wanted. This is harmless romantic entertainment, and I would heartily recommend it if you just want a little yuri to veg out with. It's also just pretty well-paced in general. It doesn't draw out their feelings in a will-they-or-won't-they. Even the lackluster parts (like, IMO, the first chapter) don't linger for too long and are ultimately fine. I'm sure this description will turn off people who arelooking for something complex or edgy, and that's fine, but this is worth checking out.
Hana and Hina are two high school girls working at the same character goods shop, but they are completely different from one another. Hana is petite, uncertain and shy, while Hina is tall, confident, and trendy. Yet they share a secret: their school has a strict policy against taking part-time jobs. They also discover that both of them share an irresistible attraction to things that are cute, be it the uniforms at their all-girls' school or... each other! Just how long will Hana and Hina be able to keep their after school jobs, and their feelings for each other, a secret? (Source: Seven Seas Entertainment)
Hana to Hina wa Houkago is a very average lesbian love story, but in the best possible ways. Hana to Hina wa Houkago is what happens when, despite there being nothing particularly spectacular about a work, it executes all of its average ideas so well that it ends up being far better than it has a right to be. Hana to Hina wa Houkago does not break any major ground and it isn't the most amazing piece of art that I've ever experienced. What Hana to Hina wa Houkago is, is a manga that knows exactly what it wants to be and tells a relentlesslycute (albeit a bit angsty) teenage love story between two girls. If you want a really good but just "normal" shoujo ai/yuri story to read, Hana to Hina wa Houkago is a phenomenal place to look.
This is a spoiler free review but I will talk about the basic plot points but its no more spoilery (Is that a word?) than a normal synopsis. Hope this helps! Story - 7 Hana to Hina for the most part has a really well executed story line. Basically what you see is what you get with this manga, Two girls work at the same shop after school, one is basically a model who likes cute things and one is a cute thing that likes the model. This is a spoiler free review however I will say that most of this plot relies on angst, whichin a yuri romance manga is pretty standard. There are times the writer could have gone into more detail with certain mini story lines but in the end if you like Yuri Romance, then you will get exactly what you want from Hana to Hina, but not a lot more. Art - 9 The art (and story) was done by Milk Morinaga, the same person who did the immensely popular Girlfriends. The Hana to Hina character designs and backgrounds are all up to the same standard. I was also very pleased with the fact that even though the main characters had the trademark Milk Morinaga mix of a dark haired bob and a long haired blonde, the characters personality come out more in their designs which separate them from her other work. If you like yuri manga, then you have seen Girlfriends already and know whether this art style is for you. Character - 7 The two main characters are both very likable and it was never a struggle to want these two to end up together. The characters have a personality that never falters throughout and never do anything really unlike them which is essential for the basis of a good story. The bad thing about the main characters is their lack of depth, it makes every minor detail in their lives a huge problem which personally for me is annoying. However they are teenagers so in this instance it won't ruin your enjoyment of the manga, if at all. Enjoyment - 7 I really enjoyed Hana to Hina, the story was written well enough so that my immersion wasn't broken unnecessarily and it has all the great parts that any fan of the Yuri genre came for. That being said it doesn't go beyond that and as I've mentioned before I believe with a few (Rather large) tweaks this could have the potential to be one of my top 5 yuri manga, if not top 3, which is disappointing. Overall - 7 Overall, if you like a like Milk Morinagas art style, good chemistry between two main character and mind a pinch of angst, then Hana to Hina will definitely be worth a read, even if it probably wont be making anyones top 5 anytime soon.
If I had to describe this series, I would say it is the standard yuri series, perfect for someone new to the genre or manga in general. It doesn't take the world by storm; instead, it is a comfortable world that almost feels like coming home. Honestly, the characters are pretty standard for a yuri series. Hana is the short cutie that secretly works for her hobbies. She isn't really notable besides her cuteness and her empathy. She (mostly) does an excellent job at being inoffensive in any way. Hina is the tall cool model that secretly loves cute stuff, another standard yuri manga lead character. The entire school feels obsessed with her, so she is somewhat isolated from everyone except for Hana when it comes to what she wants to do. The other characters aren't really of note, though Hana's best friend is pretty decent. The story is very standard: girl loves girl in a world where that's not considered normal, so the she has to carefully navigate her feelings and strive for happiness. There are details I like and story beats that are intriguing to a small degree, but there were 2 major issues I had. The first was towards the latter middle half where one avoids the other, something happens to the other girl, and the first girl is bothered that the other girl didn't tell her... This whole conflict and cause are pretty quickly forgotten when it shouldn't. The other issue is the final conflict... It was weak and forced, but the conclusion that comes from it was pretty awesome, so I forgive it. 8/10 It's the perfect starting point to get into GL, so I do recommend it! Just enjoy a predictable, simple, and angsty sweet story between two lovely high school girls. For veteran readers, it's like coming home after a long day out in the exciting world of work and adventure.
