I enjoyed this manga a lot more then I expected I would. Story- 8/10 Quite simple, but there is quite a few silly subplots and random stuff out of no where to not make it feel like just a monotonous romcom. Art-8/10 I'm a big fan of coolshinyuku's older "scratchy" art style. Has a very 2000s vibe but a lot more refined. Characters-8/10 The characters feel pretty fleshed out, in the beginning leaning heavily one one trait but quickly revealing to not be so one dimensional. His other Manga "Mononoke sharing" suffered from having boring characters for half the cast.Enjoyment- 9/10 Simple and fun, the 4 panel works very well for this series to keep the pace very consistent. Overall: 8/10 will definitely re read this in the future.
Haru Jigokumeguri is the eldest daughter of a highly successful businessman, gifted with both intelligence and beauty. Kawayanagi Tsurezure is an eccentric boy who dresses in 20th century fashion and has a habit of gazing up at clouds for hours on end. Haru is prideful, arrogant, and egocentric, while Kawayanagi is unable to strike even the most basic of conversations. These shortcomings lead them to be shunned by the rest of their classmates, and so the two gravitate towards one another. The lonely classmates find a mutual friend in Akane Tendou, a jolly girl who finds pleasure in seeing them together. Now, with their confidence restored, Haru and Kawayanagi embark on a journey towards bettering themselves. [Written by MAL Rewrite]
I don't usually write reviews but this manga definitely deserves one. This was the first 4-koma manga I've ever read and honestly I was genuinely about to drop it after a few chapters since I couldn't see were the plot was going, it all felt so disconnected and didn't seem too good of a story. In the end I decided to go through with the decision of reading it and Im so grateful for that. The characters are not the usual tropes and going forward with the story they gain so much depth to the point were they make you emotional more than once. The character developmenttruly is amazing and the plot, even if really interesting and sometimes kind of deep, it always feels lighthearted. The comedy is also noteworthy, Jiiya the goat. Definitely recommended
*This review has light spoilers.* This manga is a 4koma about two strange individuals that have a hard time getting along with others coming together. As is the case with most 4koma, most of it is just random gag events, but over time their relationship builds up from acquaintances to friends to lovers and then there are various developments with them as lovers. The comedy is reasonably solid from beginning to end. The actual story is more of a mixed bag. The focus is heavily on Haru and Kawayanagi, which is good as they do make a really cute couple, but there are also a number of interestingside characters whose relationships to the main characters turn out to be important and add some variety. Haru and Kawayanagi have pretty complex backgrounds which end up being the source of various issues. Still, even with all that the story is quite simple. There may be lots of complexities, but they aren’t delved into that much, and any issues that arise are dealt with pretty quickly in ways that often feel pretty anti-climactic. I suppose that this isn’t that surprising for a 4koma, but it still feels kind of disappointing. The portion where they’re becoming friends and then lovers along with the associated character development in Haru is incredibly solid, but that’s basically only the first quarter. The portions after that in general are weaker. There are parts that are just as strong, such as the portion focusing on Haru’s sister Aki or the portion centered around Haru’s friend Akane’s background. But beyond that for the most part the story itself weren’t that great, with the resultant character development not feeling fleshed out that well. While Haru’s character arc is pretty strong overall just on virtue of the high points in the manga, Kawayanagi's character arc felt pretty stunted overall. One reason for that is that most of his arc occurs during the last quarter which wasn't that great because it felt overtly melodramatic and like it was dragging on too long. Thus, the ending overall was only reasonably satisfying. The art isn’t that great. The character designs were interesting enough, but the art itself felt somewhat lacking. I suppose it's fine for a 4koma, but it veers from that format enough that the weakness in art does feel like it has an impact.
**For this review I will be spoiling the First volume (out of 4)** The manga is about a quiet weird boy who mostly has fun by staring into the distance. The other character is this snobby rich kid ohime type. Right she talks like Bow down before your queen peasants as I am your superior. Which is pretty hot but lets not go there. This is the romance comedy about these 2 characters. As well as there budding romance and the effect they have on each other. The character development in this series is very good Both for the male lead and the female lead. They bothretain there core personalities whilst simultaneously changing how they talk, how they act. I wouldn't exactly call it subtle but its more like extremely well paced. Over the course of 4 volumes this happens very very naturally. This is incredibly impressive tbh. And its not just them. The side characters as well grow and you can see that subtle change. In essence it does a good job of not shoving it in your face but at the same time being noticeable and natural. I also quite enjoyed the romance in this series. This is in fact a dating romance series. The main couple get together by the end of the first volume. Despite this I thought the romance would actually progress more. There relationship does stay more like friends but still in a rather cute way. And there relationship is romantic in nature. There are series where it doesn't feel like the characters are more than friends despite confessing. I'm glad i didn't get this feeling that way. The comedy is top notch. Jiiya the butler for The female lead is exceptional. He literally says he's doing it to fuck with her its amazing. Quite a few jokes were funny but as long as Jiiya was involved I could not stop laughing. Honestly I loved pretty much everything in regards to Jiiya. This guy was the funniest shit i've seen in a long time. Not just in manga but just in general. Despite my praise I think the series still falls short which pretty much falls due to the last volume in the series. The last volume isn't good. It separates from the comedic romcomy style and goes more drama and story heavy into the plot. The serious nature of the series does not suit it at all and I was very much not enjoying pretty much the entire last volume. Yes the ending had merit but the damage was done. I also quite liked the father in the series. He felt like a normal rich dad. I liked how the author inverted tropes here. Which is why the first 3 volumes were so fun. It was never really anything unique but the last volume killed it's chances to be something truly special. In the end the series does a lot of good things but is actually missing some flair as well. Sometimes the art doesn't look as good and though it is a fun series, you aren't missing anything if you don't read it. TLDR: Short fun romcom for 3 volumes. 6/10
