Tsurebito is a beautiful story, and there's nothing quite like it. Its concept might not be original, but it was carried out superbly. I can't really think of any stories I've read that is similar to this one. For such a short manga, it grips at my heart multiple times, and with the exciting story telling, I wish the manga never ends. However, it was best that it is only this short. Sure, there are questions unanswered, and the world in this manga can be expanded much more and used to create multiple stories. But I think it is because of this length that it wasable to wrap up the story nicely and really seared its message into the reader's mind. Besides the story, the mind-blowing composition and detailed background art are its selling point. You've got to read this manga, even if it's only for the art.
Tsurebito is about the people who escort you from purgatory into the world of the dead. After you die you must go through your personal gate into the world of the dead, and companions are the ones who lead you there. (Source: MU)
If you like resolution in the stories that you read, then this will likely interest you. I have never read a story with such a mysterious beginning and open ended vibe that has been able to conclude in a satisfying ending that answers pretty much every question that you could have about it. The author does a splendid job at tying everything together and while things do remain a mystery during the events of the story, everything is made to fit like a puzzle and makes complete sense in the end. The storytelling is wonderful, and I just couldn't help but read the whole seriesin one sitting. 「Companion」or「Tsurebito」is not only a marvelous example of storytelling, but also a journey through life and death, fair and unfair, from many perspectives; truly making it a thought provoking read. I do hope you will choose to give it a read.
°English Version° I finished reading “Tsurebito” by Akihito Yoshitomi and wanted to give a short review. The manga is self concluding and has only 23 chapters. It tells a story that tells us about death, where we are going. It is also a story of a love lost by tragedy. A tragedy for which other tragedies are born, and other loves are born. The manga also shows us how real and deep the soul of another can be, the worst parts of one. Being short, it does not introduce many characters, but it manages to connect very well with the most important ones. By spending in an intersticebetween the living and the dead, it plays nicely with the concept of time. That allows you to mix an ever-changing environment where reality intersects with people's feelings, and thus show a surreal drawing if you want from this plane . It's a fairly basic story, but it knows how to develop and knows how to make you shed tears in some moments that it builds perfectly. Being quite short, it's a quick read manga and while there are a couple of good twists, it doesn't need too much attention. Tsurebito shows that fear of death, and he accepts this as something real. We don't know where we're going, or if we're going anywhere, and the manga doesn't try to show that. It stays with that feeling of living your life to the fullest, taking advantage of every moment. One day you are, and another day you are not.
