Shinozaki-san Ki wo Ota Shika ni! is a manga about Akina learning more about otaku culture because she ended up becoming friends with one even though she looks down on it. The manga is a SoL about a bunch of characters interacting with otakus as they talk about what goes on like going comiket, creating media like fanart, and IRL events for anime stuff portrayed in a positive light. The girls are drawn in a cutesy style which doesn't improve or get worse as the series goes on. I enjoyed the series a bit, but Akina got really annoying with constantly looking down on otaku culturewhile also enjoying it with her new friends. Except for Akina's internal dialogue, I enjoyed the character interactions. The ending has me mixed because while what happens is what I want to happen, it doesn't last for very long before just ending the series which was a bit disappointing. I was hoping for a few more pages to be able to enjoy it for longer. Overall the ending dragged it down a lot for how I enjoyed the series.
With her beautiful looks and outgoing personality, Akina Shinozaki used to be the leader of a group of hotties on the top of a class hierarchy. After her high school debut was delayed, however, she finds herself isolated in the class. Next to Akina sits Kaede Sasamura, an otaku girl who can turn into a bishoujo with her glasses off. Akina decides to get Kaede out of the otaku life and groom her for a perfect high school life, but the only way to get close to Kaede is for Akina to pretend to be a Precure otaku herself to her chagrin... "Shinozaki-san Ki wo Ota Shika ni!" is a manga that is presented a little different then most yuri mangas. Each chapter is a setup for a comedy sketch with some sweet moments here and there. I enjoyed reading this very much and had quite a few laughs. The art is really cute and I had no problem differentiating between the characters and it did not bother me at any point. The story is sort of an Alice in wonderland setup where a "normal" girl reluctantly falls in the otaku rabbit hole. She wants to turn her otaku friends into normal people but finds herself attracted more andmore to the dark side but is completely tsundere about it. The characters do not really progress but I do not think they need to. It is more like every chapter just starts back from 0 creating the setup for similar funny comedy sketches and that is what this series is all about. An endless series of comedy sketches in otaku world with strong yuri undertones. In the ending there is some character progression but I feel the writer just wanted to end the series.
If you're here for some romance and GL, this isn't the place for you. This manga is more about learning about otaku culture from cute girls while one of them "hates" it the whole time. I read this for the former, so I was highly disappointed. There are so many characters that I think even the author forgot who was friends with whom, and they are all shallow and flat. For being told Akina is smart, her denial is incredible, and it goes from kind of cute to frustrating quick. Too bad that and her "hatred" for otaku and their culture is the primary personality traitfor her. Each character has a role, ranging from the ditsy determined one to the pervy boob grabber, and none of them grow beyond their trope. While there is progression in Akina's learning about otaku, there is little progression elsewhere.. In the first place, her plan is to get Kaede to stop being an anime/manga otaku by..... turning her into a fashion otaku? Even that is barely tackled throughout the series. Relationships don't change: they either are or are not a thing. Characters meet, and they have whatever relationship they get in that meeting until the end. The events are pretty standard from other manga and anime about learning about otaku culture, but it isn't special or even logical at times. There is also far more BL than GL in the series, which is crazy considering the premise is about GL... Which Akina denies endlessly. 5/10 I hesitate to recommend this, especially with the premise in mind. If you're here about romance or GL, go find something else. There is almost nothing here for you. If you want to learn more about Japanese otaku culture from cute girls, this manga works fine. The ending is rushed and not great, so there's that too.
