Surprised that this doesn't have any reviews. Yet..... Arararararararararara....where to start??? Intro! Shina dark, as the description says, is about a guy called satan, living on an island called Shina Dark, gets a package call of boat loads of women and fair maidens from across the lands as sacrifices. Funnily ironic, he is the opposite of his rumors that were started. I'll get into better detail later. -STORY- Rather, there is a nice story that goes along with this manga. How the whole "Satan-is-going-to-kill-you-all-if-you-don't-give-him-all-your-fair-maidens-&-princesses" was proven wrong actually went well and the concept of an island of despair turning into an island of prosperity because ofSatan just wanting peace was also a good concept. But the story doesn't fully focus on him. It also focuses on former princesses and the several maiden citizens that live on the island. All of them have a back story. Well, the important ones at least. Each of those main characters had either a tragic past or the reason they are there. It has a "problem of the day" formula or "character spotlight" for each chapter. Some times a mix of both. The comedy is suttle, but nothing to complain about. There are ecchi scenes in the first 13 chapters of the manga, but then it just mellows out a bit later. Overall, it's a fine story. It has a good balance and does not overdose on its ecchi contents. -ART- The art style is, how to say, stands alone in its own shining light. Rather than that, it is very great! It has a good design for its characters and monsters, also a nice consistence with no sudden changes to its style. It has a natural feel and has a nice use of screen tones. It does have little problems but those are just clouds in the sky if you know what I mean. It's pretty much something I can't really comment on that much since I have no problem with it. Well, I would say that it lacks much luscious backgrounds and areas, but that's not really a big deal. You'll indeed enjoy this manga if you like ecchi art, beautiful girls and sometimes barren landscapes. -CHARACTER- I have to say, I like these characters. If you must know, the main two princesses that the story focuses have a sort of opposite composite type of character. Like one is very suttle, calm, shy, your near-typical-but-not princess and then your battle front-lines princess that is all for justice or such. Their personalities are pretty separate, sometimes don't complement each other but it's a good set up. Now lets look at the other three protagonists. Satan and his comrades. All I will say is that they indeed complement each others personality. Jokes can be easily made with them around and are rather there for good mellowing out on bringing in the bad but funny news. They are characters that you really have to see to know. -ENJOYMENT- I have so far enjoyed this manga and have waited so long just to see the chapters. Of course, I haven't grown tired so I really like this series. I really have nothing to say here. -OVERALL- A well made, story that can mellow out between its ecchi, comedy and drama content. Though, not really the best, since it could work out if you like either even if one or two of the three contents that are weak, then the third might catch you. All it needs is just world turning events and some of the sort. It's a nice manga, but needs more substance to its story. If you don't like its ecchi content, believe me, I don't think you'll like the rest. But give it a try when your time is open after reading all those other manga.
Welcome to the cursed island of Shina Dark. This island is called home by the dark lord Exoda C. Claw AKA Satan. He's as powerful a being as you could ever hope to meet. Feared and hated the world over for the infinite amount of atrocities he's committed. He's.....actually a really nice guy who just wants to chill out around the castle and relax... After a month long nap he awakens to find that the rest of the world has made up another ridiculous rumor and blown it way out of proportion and that has caused his little island to be crowded with a thousand beautiful princesses meant to be his mistresses/sacrifices. Worse yet is that since they have set foot on his island they are all believed to be cursed and are now shunned by their homelands. What's a couch potato Satan to do with 1000 women who wont leave? Who can say? (Source: MU)
Shina Dark is like a little curious child that is eager to try out everything in reach which might seem promising one way or another. Similarly it is unable to decide what to do or what it wants to be and never manages to finish what it started. It all begins with the revival of the demon lord 'Exoda Zero Clow' (henceforth simply referred to as Satan) which happens every 100 years during an eclipse. According to the legends he is an evil powerful being whose thirst for blood comes second only to his lustful desire for beautiful virgins. That is why, in order to appeasehis wrath, the various nations of the world sent their most beautiful women and princesses as sacrifices to his island, Shina Dark. There's just one problem – Satan is actually a good guy who only longs for peace. So much for the premise. Surely, it's not the first time we hear a story about a demon lord who doesn't quite meet the expectations associated with his title. And it's also not the first time our protagonist is surrounded by a bunch of beautiful women (whose only purpose is to please him). Still, it's not too bad of an outset. In fact, if it wasn't for the comedic part and the mess that it turns into later on, it could raise some interesting questions about the definition of good and evil, prejudices and inevitable conflicts. So, what goes wrong? In order to elaborate on that, let me introduce some important characters first. First of all there's Satan, of course. He is a pretty easy-going and lazy fellow who only wishes to savour his days in peace. On the other hand, he is good-natured, caring and willing to help others whenever they are in need of it. Somehow, he seems to have had a sad past as every now and then he indulges himself in reminiscences of a woman who apparently had a fairly big impact on his life. Unfortunately, we never learn anything about that woman or how she was related to Satan and the way he is now, at all. We can only guess. Besides Satan, his butler and his maid (who both mostly exist for the humorous part of the manga), there are two highly important former princesses, namely Galett Fey Sowauge and Christina Rey Holden, who were sent as sacrifices to Shina Dark by their countries. Galett is a strong, righteous girl who wishes to be of use to others. Christina, on the other hand, is a shy, insecure and frail girl who only wishes for a place that she belongs to. The former abandoned by her parents, the latter abandoned by her nation. In addition to their origin from enemy nations they possess various contradictory traits which makes it difficult for them to form a lasting friendship. In the beginning those two big-breasted beauties mainly serve to accumulate the amount of ecchi scenes and emphasize the harem-elements of the manga. (There is, however, no real romance in Shina Dark.) Later on, when the story starts to focus more on these characters, their past, their motives, what troubles and what drives them, emotional drama starts to replace the images of their bodily features (most of it at least). Still sounds interesting? Well, yes, it is - to some extend. The real problems come with the execution. Somehow, Shina Dark just can't decide what it wants to be. It is constantly changing between various plot-elements, genres and the direction the characters are developing into. For instance, it starts as a simple ecchi comedy harem, then gains an emphasis on the princesses' story whereby simaltanously many political as well as some economical issues arise. Tensions between opposing nations, historical events, conquests and wars and the colleteral problems that come with it; all of that is mentioned but never explained or elaborated on, much less tried to resolve. Many characters are introduced, mainly relatives of Galett and Christina, but never given any purpose. Furthermore, monsters emerge from the depths of the world and Shina Dark turns into some kind of battle shounen (not quite though), even worse as it suddenly obtains RPG elements which really don't make any sense at all. Lastly, we get some mystery and horror components mixed in which just seem completely out of place. Shina Dark fails to fully focus on even one of those aspects and the few solutions that it does manage to give to the huge amount of questions raised are mostly dull and implausible. Why would Satan, for instance, a good-natured helping guy, watch the population of his island fight some legendary beast which they can hardly deal with – whereby many sacrifices are given – just so that the two princesses can strengthen their resolves and their relationship to each other? And why do the people suddenly stop believing in the legends and voluntarily move to Satan's island, although he was considered an evil wrathful being which has to be slayed as fast as possible for hundreds of years (apparently, he proved them wrong – in no time at all, with no effort at all)? Shina Dark uses too many plot devices with no real structure or concept behind it and thereby only manages to be average at most things. It did have its potential. And if it didn't leave everything unanswered or with unsatisfying dull solutions it would have been a much more interesting read. Still, it's not as bad as my score might indicate. It has its good aspects. The art is one of them. It is clean and lucid. The character design is typical for an ecchi manga and said characters are drawn rather well. There is nothing to complain about here. It should meet the requirements of most readers – including myself; at least if you aren't turned down by some bare skin. Perhaps if this troubled child were given a future, that is to say a sequel which further elaborates on the many questions raised and solves the numerous problems that emerged in Shina Dark, then it could turn into a fairly interesting being that, hopefully, won't leave a messy trail of the things it played with behind. So let's hope it gets that future, along with the ability to eradicate its flaws.
Originally, the premise seems interesting, however, the story does not expand after the first couple chapters. However, the plot gets lost after the island becomes a democracy, perhaps even before then. In conclusion, this manga would have had the potential to be great, however, the plot dissolved, became a bunch of random arcs which had no connection, and finally, it ends upon a cliffhanger without a sequel.
Chapter 20 completed sensei Story 6: Concept is quite good, the idea of Demon King being misunderstood and the whole thing of reversed roles of kingdoms of man and demon kingdom. As for other things there are cliche moments everywhere. The usual dualism of characters (female lead) one shields what other is lacking and vice versa. As for Demon king...Well it will be described in character section. As i was saying concept was good but realization was bad plainly bad. Until chapter 10 i was still hoping to see something good but soon after we see filler episodes one after another while author throws away a vibe ofdepth unto this story...but it is shown more like a future event and can be described as a person knocking to your door having a fancy suit and spouting future happiness while deep inside you see through his shallow charade. Only chapter 20 has showed something deep but alas author was probably too dumb and thought that you can make crappy filler episodes to boost popularity - Which in fact can help but only when series are too serious and a change of pace can be helpful but here it was +/- balanced out on cliche humor and seriousness while the latter was being pushed back until it revived in chapter 20 to tease you. There are many plot holes if you think about, many things untold and are considered to be featured in the future (they wont series got AXED). Logically speaking there are a lot of problems with the world mechanic. Art 8: Characters were likeable (drawn i mean), background work was impressive but what was lacking is proper panel placement and dialogue bubbles were sometimes confusing (I have good examples of what is good and what is bad so don't go all pissy on me). All in all art for those years was quite good especially when author showed medieval technology vs futuristic technology (best example when 2 ships were at the port one being colonial time other futuristic one standing side by side). Character 7: Was good to be perfectly clear (character progression, some depth with potential and felt a bit alive), that being said, not in this world and not in this setting. female leading roles (2 girls), are from one point of view good from other are horrendous. Tsundure elements are annoying as f*&k, because i freaking saw that they are not shallow dolls and then you see quite mature ones becomes a children and scales are being thrown in tandem all the time it's like split personality disorder (mild one). They have chapters when they are clearly shown as damaged people who become healed as the story progresses. Demon king - AKA the lazy bum + op on the side (there is a major problem because of how he was made). He was made to be as a jester of the series where his story is being shown as deep one only in chapter 20, before that i was thinking he was made solely to be made fun off and as a support character with father figure premise tipping it all as a cherry he was doing everything from the sidelines (where it mattered he was helping majorly but from the shadows) Enjoyment 6: Hard to enjoy when you bump on plot holes and secrets (knowing now that it will be impossible to uncover them, since it is AXED like a cherry tree with the help of once certain president). Also we have character interactions which are horrendous if you put them in real life perspective unless you are a person who gets off from masochism or a person who seeks inspiration from looking at things from other perspective. Overall 6: Would have given it 8 or 7 if it was taged as shounen but it is clearly stated as seinen, so burn like a forest fire on a summer day #(%h. Shounen like elements include:Beating OP Demon king for perverse moments, for misunderstandings on the beaters side since their opinion of him is bad (for no reason since he cleared up myths about his persona), being made fun of when in realty is majorly helping and saving things and etc. Females or should I say now citizens (males came after, who would have guessed with that gender demography) are major douchebags, constantly abusing demon king (i think he likes it thought no other explanation for his reaction to this). Let's just say would i be in place of Demon king i would most probably would like to help citizens if they would be thrown in situation that they were thrown but if they would be as ungrateful as those citizens on Demon kings islands i would either isolate my castle from them, teleport out myself or send them off forcefully (you may think it is childish, well yes and no if you consider that having a bit of pride and dignity is childish then yes if not then no). It wasn't funny for it was cringy to the bones, i presume because i already had my share of these interactions in manga and my sense of justice doesn't allow it to be taken lightly for what is happening out here. Demon king called a lazy bum is contradicted by the author himself (who in the right mind would call King lazy when a man is planting rice? Of course author, who has memory of golden fish and versatility of a koala). That being said were it shounen i wouldn't cry like a toddler who just did some nasty stuff in his diapers, but it being a seinen made me feel like i was lied to since it has 0 seinen logic 100% shounen logic when characters are dumb and smart at the same time, smart being with some problem solving dumb being with character interactions (it is like they imprinted your you in their mind and imprinted based on your shallow mind setting by judging book by it's cover) Would i suggest to read it? Depends on you, if you like shounen being hidden as a seinen then give it a spin if you came for some seinen (mature stuff i guess you can call it like that) then forget it, author is like bulldozer who destroys your imagination that being fast and chaotic. Reference to people of the island ---> If someone cry's and blames you for other peoples actions that were based on rumors and are spiteful even though they are given freedom and free food, that certain person doesn't deserve free food and freedom, slave labor in uranium mines are more adequate. Reference to real world ---> I have my plot of land, then suddenly neighbors start to throw away their daughters that are hindrances to them, because of some rumors and convenience. Later those daughters even after being given housing and food start to complain and even start to endanger your life, because rumors were false and you are actually a kind man, we fast forward in time and now your homestead is occupied, your land is now not yours and your minions are someone else minions, while you are crowned as a dumb, perverted jester without any dignified quality's. After recreating situation like this in my mind it being a seinen i start to doubt that 6 was an objective rating......
