Kurapika, Kurapika, Kurapika... Everyone's favorite blonde haired scarlet eyed chain user. We finally get to see into his past and was it worth the wait? Yeah, for the most part I think so! Story 9/10: While only 2 chapters, the story knows that you would only be reading this if you are familiar with the Hunter X Hunter series and jumps right into it. While not required reading by any means it shows how Kurapika was able to leave his village and explore the world, just like a certain Gon Freecs...Not really a coming of age story but a boy curious about the world and wantingto explore it from himself. We also learn a bit about the structure of Kurta society and why they are the way they are. Not much can really be said as Kurapika and his friend Pyro(Pairo?) have to prove themselves that they are able to take on the outside world with a brief trial to demonstrate their worth. Very simple but if you love Kurapika and Hunter x Hunter it is a nice way to spend maybe an hour or so reading. Art 8/10: I know the Hunter x Hunter manga gets harped on for it's art style and how simplistic and messy it looks but Togashi really took the time to make it look a lot cleaner and smoother. If you are coming from the anime it might be a bit jarring to see his art but if you have been keeping up with the manga, it is nothing new. It does the job and it does it well. Character 9/10: Not much to be said here as the readers should already know Kurapika's personality and character in the main series but it is quite fun seeing him much younger and so much more adventurous and for the lack of a better word... childlike! Pyro/Pairo doesn't get much play but he is important in his own right and demonstrates it nicely. Kurapika makes for an interesting transition from plucky young boy to revenge seeking young adult. Enjoyment 9/10: Like the last paragraph, nothing really needs to be said. It is for the fans and if you are a fan you will have a good time with it. The outcome is quite obvious from the start and you know what happens to his village, but seeing how it all comes together is the interesting bit. The last couple of pages of the 2nd chapter are really interesting is all I will say though. Overall 9/10: If you are a fan you will likely find yourself reading this. It can honestly be read anytime after Kurapika's reveal for his revenge and motivation. If you aren't a fan, I am not sure why you would be reading this but you probably won't finding it very entertaining. In the end, just a nice little story about Kurapika and his early life.
The people of the Kurta Clan live deep in the forest, far from the presence of outsiders. Susceptible to prejudice and discrimination because of their scarlet eyes, they remain hidden from the general public, letting only a distinct few clan members venture outside. But after helping Sheila—a woman who found herself stranded in the forest—Kurapika and his best friend Pyro become fascinated with the outside world. In order to achieve his dreams of exploring life beyond the forest, Kurapika must pass the clan elder's three tests in order to be granted permission. [Written by MAL Rewrite]
I read these two chapters as a single one-shot and it just works! Honestly, even if you haven't read or watched Hunter x Hunter and you aren't familiar with Kurapika, the way the story is set up allows it to be an easy and enjoyable read. At it's core it is a tried and true story of a group of people different from the rest of the world who live a very fragile lifestyle to maintain the peace they hold onto. Of course, curiosity and the restrictive ways of monotony get the best of our MC and thus creates the tension leading up to certain fatefulevents. The story, art, and characters are all solid for such a short read. If anything I almost wish it had just one more chapter to flesh out a couple of characters a bit or to show a bit more of what happens post the unspeakable actions that took place. If you haven't read this and are familiar with Hunter x Hunter, Read it! If you haven't seen or read Hunter x Hunter, read this first!
A spin-off focused on Kurapika that further delves into his story. Kurapika's Memories is extra material from the Hunter × Hunter universe that focuses directly on one of the series' most complex characters: Kurapika. These special chapters were written by Yoshihiro Togashi and serve as a kind of prologue to the character's story. Despite being relatively short, it plays a very important role in the overall narrative of the work. After all, here we see something that the main story only briefly mentions: Kurapika's childhood and life within the Kurta clan. In the main work, we know that the Kurta clan was brutally massacred by the Phantom Troupe,an event that deeply marks Kurapika's life and practically defines his entire objective throughout the story. However, the original series doesn't show many details about what life was like within the tribe before this tragedy. That's precisely where this spin-off becomes so interesting. By following moments from Kurapika's childhood, the reader gains a better understanding of the culture and lifestyle of the Kurta clan. We see how they lived isolated from the rest of the world, protecting the secret of their famous scarlet eyes, a unique characteristic that would ultimately become the reason for the tragedy that would later follow. This type of contextualization greatly enhances the emotional impact of the story. When we only hear about the clan massacre, we already understand that it was something terrible. However, when we get to know the members of the tribe, their customs, and their relationships, this tragedy takes on a much greater weight. The story also shows Kurapika's relationship with his childhood friends, especially with Pairo. The friendship between the two is one of the central points of this small arc. Pairo is someone who sees the world in a gentler and more dreamy way, serving as an interesting counterpoint to young Kurapika, who already demonstrates a more serious and determined personality. The small adventure that the two experience during the story is not something grandiose or full of action. In fact, the focus here is much more on the relationships between the characters and the emotional construction of the narrative. It is through these simple moments that we begin to better understand who Kurapika was before the tragedy that destroyed his life. This approach is very effective because it creates empathy with the Kurta clan. By getting to know these people better, even if only briefly, the reader begins to feel even more the weight of the loss that Kurapika carries. This makes his quest for revenge against the Phantom Troupe even more understandable. Furthermore, this material also helps to show that Kurapika is not driven solely by hatred. He carries a deep emotional scar caused by the loss of his people, and understanding his origins allows for a better understanding of the character's motivations throughout the main story. Therefore, even though it is a short story, Kurapika's Memories ends up being an extremely valuable complement to the Hunter × Hunter universe. It not only adds context to the main narrative but also strengthens the development of one of the most important characters in the work. Ultimately, it's the kind of spin-off that doesn't try to reinvent anything, but fulfills its role very well: expanding the world of the story and deepening a character already beloved by fans. For those who enjoy Hunter x Hunter, especially Kurapika, this reading is practically mandatory, as it helps to better understand his journey, his pain, and his motivations. Final score: 7/10. I highly recommend it to fans of the character and the series.
