Persona 4 The Magician is a great read for those who are already emotionally invested in the Persona 4 franchise. The original P4 media already does a good job with presenting Yosuke's character, and this manga is a great supplemental read that adds to it even further. Being able to see more of Yosuke's background before Yu arrived in Inaba as well as the early interactions between them and seeing some key P4 moments from his point of view is what I wanted from this manga, and that is exactly what I got. TLDR; It's decent as a standalone story, but in order to appreciatefully you need to read/watch/play the original Persona 4 story.
Yousuke Hanamura feels dejected after his parents change careers, forcing him to move from the city to the backwater town of Inaba. Upon transferring to Yasogami High School, he struggles to find his place in the community as people still believe he is an outsider. He spends all of his free time begrudgingly helping his father at Junes, the department store taking away business from the local shops in the town. While he takes a break from his hectic schedule, Yousuke crosses paths with Saki Konishiβa coworker who takes an interest in him. Persona 4 The Magician explores the backstory behind Yuu Narukami's friend and the Magician confidant, Yousuke Hanamura. [Written by MAL Rewrite]
The first few chapters are very entertaining if you're a fan of the game. its a really cute way to see a more in-depth view of Yosuke's past that wasn't displayed in-depth in the game. However, by chapter 5 it's just persona 4, and there's nothing new or interesting for people who have already played and its rehashing the same events over again with almost no changes to the p4 manga or the game. If you're not a fan of the game, there's very little to get out of it. Yosuke is pretty endearing, but it's not long enough to have any meaningful impact forsomeone who's not a fan, and there's so little story that it's kind of pointless. It's a cute game addition but nothing more.
If you played the game, you already know Yosuke's story. So there's no reason to read this manga If you haven't played the game, then don't read this manga because it's full of spoilers. It doesn't really add any new context to his character in my honest opinion. It just rehashes things from the game, but it does it well. Not an awful read, but not one I find myself willing to recommend or re-do. I also feel that a lot of Persona 4's atmosphere is contained within the game. Within its visuals and music, while the manga recreates some of that it just can't capture the way theopening sequence makes you feel or how isolated most areas in Inaba are. And obviously a book can't play music.
