[ This review does NOT contain spoilers ] Dimension W is an amazing sci-fi experience and in this review I want to expose some of my thoughts related to this manga. Please, note that I'm not a native english speaker, so there may be some problems in my grammar or expressions. However, I hope it is not a problem for the understanding of my ideas. [ Characters ] The dynamic between Kyouma and Mira is pretty good. It's a great duo and both of them have good character arcs, solid backgrounds, great moments, and everything that you'd ask of protagonists. On the other hand, the secondary characters and extrasare fine, this is one of those stories where most of the characters have a specific role in the plot. Thanks to that, they don't feel out of place and most of them have a recognizable personality that doesn't fall in gimmicks. My only problem here is that you will remember them more for what they did for the plot than for who they are. It's still a solid cast and some secondaries are exceptionally well done. [ World and Plot ] As for the worldbuilding, I would say that it's well done. I spent a lot of time analyzing events and the chronological order of them (and when I say "a lot", it's A LOT), and it's obvious that the author had a lot of things planned from the very beginning. This manga has a lot of juicy foreshadowing. The rereading value of this story is quite high, since you will notice a lot of things that you didn't in the first time. I wouldn't say that the manga has a huge amount of complex worldbuilding that can rival with every manga in existence, but it's correct for everything that the story wants to expose. As for the plot itself, it was of my liking. I really liked the arcs, they all can be considered its own thing but they're also related to previous events. This manga offers a great variety in its arcs. You can find some action, mystery, sci-fi focused chapters, among other things. Everything is handled well until the end, and the author managed to connect a lot of things, thus creating a very solid and enjoyable experience. My only problem here is that there is a small plot hole (yes, I'm an expert at nitpicking stuff). [ The Dimension W ] Now, this part of my review is focused on the most important fictional concept of the manga, the "Dimension W". Basically, it's the fourth dimensional axis from which infinite energy can be obtained. At first I didn't understand all the implications and stuff presented and it was very frustrating. But when I started analyzing it, I got the idea of what the author was exposing and I found it fascinating. Thanks to this element, the author created a very solid and consistent way to explain some typical elements of science-fiction stories, and it never loses continuity and logic within the universe created by Yuji Iwahara. A wise person once said that the "fantasy" is the art of the impossible, but the science-fiction is the art of the POSSIBLE. The 4th dimensional axis, the "Dimension W", represents that idea perfectly. I think that my favorite part of this element is that it's not only a bunch of technicalities, the author used this to explore some interesting topics that are closely related to the manga's main story, and that was delightful. It may be cumbersome in the beginning, but it's satisfactory when you understand it, and it also adds some depth and subtexts that can be very pleasing for people in search of them. I really liked this element, it is also SUPER original and that adds points. It's one of the greatest and most well handled sci-fi things that I've ever seen. My only problem here is that some readers may not find this concept of their interest, which would be completely understandable for those who are not in sci-fi stuff. [ Art ] I'm not an expert in this topic, but I'll say what I can say as a conventional reader with no knowledge of art theory. I think that the art is great. Iwahara's drawings are very clean and you can always understand what is happening in the pages, and it is also very expressive and I personally love the fact that the style didn't change at all with the passing of volumes, it makes the manga very consistent. Oh, and the character designs are neat, they are all recognizable and nice. [ Conclusion ] I pointed out my problems with the manga in my review, but I think that it had so many successes that those few little problems are overshadowed. So, as a final thought, I enjoyed every aspect in this manga and I consider it a very underappreciated series. I wouldn't say that it's for everyone, but it definitely deserves a shot! If you want to try it, go ahead and have fun! I hope you can enjoy it as much as I did. Thank you for reading my review!! :)
In 2036, a new axis was discovered in the 3D realm, creating the fourth dimension named Dimension W. Limitless power from Dimension W is supplied through devices known as "Coils," powering devices and machinery around the globe thanks to New Tesla Energy and the government's effort to harness its source. Kyouma Mabuchi, an illegal Coil collector, despises the use of this new technology. As an old-school junkie that has cars running on gas and pays for everything with cash, he is a lone wolf in a world saturated with technological advancement. However, while on the search to confiscate illegal Coils one day, Kyouma meets the gyroid Mira Yurizaki. Mira needs Coils to save her dying father, the founder of New Tesla Energy. Thus she joins the reluctant Kyouma on his duties, and together they begin solving the mysteries that lie behind the illegal modified Coils. Along the way, they also uncover the disturbing truth behind New Tesla Energy, as well as their own seemingly intertwined personal history. [Written by MAL Rewrite]
Just finished it, and boy what a doozy that ending was. I rated this manga as an 8, but tbh that doesn't mean much since I much prefer to rate things on a "should you watch/read" type of deal, so the number can be disregarded. Should you read this manga? Sure, I enjoyed it. Here's why. This manga feels fresh and presents a lot of new concepts other sci-fi stories rarely touch upon. One of the main reasons I feel like some people might be turned off by this work would be how the "science" in this manga is presented and explained. Iwahara-san's thoughts in this manga'safterword definitely sum up my feelings regarding the story of this manga pretty solidly. None of the "science" presented in this manga can be described as conventional. Yet somehow he managed to keep continuity intact by embracing the vagueness of a type of science that no one in real life would be able to understand. I could say it all exists within a *possibility* of "probably being real but also can be fake." In other words, despite initially presenting a world governed by seemingly futuristic laws of quantum theory, this sci-fi work is definitely more "fiction" than "science." It would be best to go into this manga with that kind of mindset. The characters are not what I would call this manga's strong point, but they are far from boring. They all serve some kind of purpose and I feel like there's no one who really feels like they don't belong. The art isn't overly detailed, but it makes up for it with an extensive level of polish. Even if the story might not make sense at times, at least you can easily tell what's happening in each panel. Overall, I feel like this manga is a mixed bag of great ideas, and ideas that aren't perfect but still work out somehow. If you are looking for a change of pace in manga, then I think Dimension W is a solid place to start. I'd even go as far as to say even a newcomer to manga can pick this up, since I feel like anyone with an open mind can get into this. (this was my first review, so there was really no planned structure to this.)
