Wow....Not a single review, huh? I suppose Yorukumo has never been officially released in English speaking areas. That's a crying shame, because it's quite a fascinating read. I'd be hard pressed to compare it to anything. Dorohedoro meets Saturn Apartments? With a good dash of post-apocalyptic goth aesthetics? Story: So what is Yorukumo about anyway? Well, at its core, it's a love story. A morbid, blood spattered yet heart-warming tale of two outcasts finding each other in an uncaring, cruel world. There is not much of an overarching plot, no world threatening scenarios. It's comparatively closer to a slice of life in structure. Characters: Now hereis where it shines. The two mains are exceedingly well written. Same goes for every side character. Yorukumo is a world of broken individuals. While that may alienate at first, everyone's actions make sense in their own F'd up way. Art: Moody. Gloomy. Fits setting and tone very well. Expressive faces and no same-face syndrome. Content warning: While nowhere near as graphic as a full on gore fest, there is still torture, abuse and all that good stuff. It doesn't come off as cheap. It's intended to be dark and it earns that darkness. If you're in the mood for something truly unique with strong world-building, if you like dark themes mixed with the strangest kind of romance....Try to track down a readable copy of Yorukumo.
The World consist of the upper, the middle, and lower classes. Those who are wealthy live in the Town. Those who are poor live in the Fields. Those below, in the thick and gloomy Forest.... In the Fields, Takaoku Resturant's show girl, Kiyoko, supports her mother by managing the food preparation. One day, a regular patron named Tanaka, who recruits day labourers for the underground, requests that they bring meals to an assassin from the Forest called "Yorukumo," or "Night Spider." Yorukumo was born in the Forest as a disposable child, raised to be void of emotions, unable to feel pain, and without knowledge of reading and writing. With Tanaka's instructions, he easily handles assassin jobs daily. When Kiyoku and Yorukumo meet, the World begins to come apart a little at a time. (Source: MU)
