Double House is listed as a yuri/romance on here, but it's not. It's about the friendship between two women who are neighbors, both of whom don't really fit into society's expectations. Both of them also work the night shift, emphasizing that they operate a little differently than the rest of society. The story is rather slice-of-life-y, and it does a good job of fleshing out the characters by showing little snippets of their life here and there. They feel like real people, and not just caricatures (which happens in some manga, unfortunately). The art style is simple and spare, but also gorgeous; the mangaka hasa great sense of composition. Overall, it was just very cute and wholesome and I really enjoyed it. I would recommend it if you want to read something upbeat about the friendship between two women. Btw, one of my worries as I began reading this was that the trans character would be depicted mockingly. That was really not at all the case. Her character was well done, and it was very respectful and sympathetic.
A slender waist, model-like height, and nice makeup make Maho Ryoutarou look amazing every day. Although Maho once lived as a boy, she now does not pay mind to different things people call her—transgender or even a drag queen—as long as she can be her true self outside of society's existing labels. More than anything, Maho wishes to escape the label of a "man." When Maho meets her new neighbor, Fujiko Kouzu, she gains a wonderful friend who effortlessly sees past the exterior and falls in love with Maho as a person. Fujiko has her own unsavory past and complicated family, always uncomfortable with the world's expectations of women. The two find the comfort and companionship in each other that they have longed for, all while trying to claim their spot in a world that lacks understanding. [Written by MAL Rewrite] Included one-shot: Tinker Bell no Hanzai
This could have been a great story about gender and sexuality, but it abruptly stops on the fourth chapter. The author starts to flesh out the two main characters in the first two chapters. The third chapter is the story of a side character. Despite mentioning no names in the last chapter, I believe the one called ティンカー・ベルの犯罪 (Tinkerbell's Crime) is not a one-shot. It is a story of the main character, Maho Ryoutarou, before changing genders. Most likely this series was axed. Maybe due to overwork since the author was creating Papa Told Me in parallel. Maybe it didn't find an audience back inthe 90s. We will never know. The four available chapters are great, but it is just the introduction to a bigger story that unfortunately got cancelled.
