Mugen Densetsu Takamagahara is a manga that carries the unmistakable glow of classic shoujo storytelling with cute creatures and charming art, something warm, dreamy, and slightly nostalgic even from the very first pages. The art style clearly reflects the golden age of 90s shoujo. It’s the kind of visual expression that holds both innocence and drama within the same frame. I grew up with this manga, so returning to it always feels like stepping back into a gentle daydream. The world of Takamagahara is rich with myth and legend, and the narrative feels both magical and strangely familiar. The story balances adventure with romance, and eventhough it introduces many characters, each of them has a distinct, memorable personality. The small, sweet creatures and guardian-like companions bring a soft, comforting charm to the more intense moments. That’s my favorite part of this manga - the gentle beings, the beautiful and lovable Binga, and the way the story emphasizes the importance of nature: the sun, the world(s), animals, trees, and the bond Yuuki shares with them. The manga carries a positive message at its core, and even when the story touches on heavier emotions or conflict, it never loses its gentle heart. There is no cynicism here, only wonder, imagination, and a belief in the meaningful connections we form with both people and the other beings we encounter along the way.
Yuuki Wakasa may be short-tempered when it comes to other people, especially her troublemaking younger brothers, but she is otherwise a normal fifth-grade student at Kamishiro Elementary School. One day, a small red bean known as a magatama falls from the dark sky and into her hands. Though tempted to throw it away out of fear, she decides to keep the stone after recalling that it is a bad omen to do such an act, and so she confronts a vision of a strange woman in a magical mirror known as the Shinjyukyou later that night. The woman warns Yuuki that her world is in danger and explains that recent occurrences of strange, dark weather came forth due to the disappearance of Amaterasu, the sun goddess. Chosen as the "Horizon Girl," Yuuki must now travel to the dream world with her new magatama and find the four other magatama bearers—the Amatsukami. Will Yuuki and the Amatsukami be able to save Amaterasu before the sun in both the spiritual world and their own disappears forever? [Written by MAL Rewrite]
