Short and sweet, this manga tops my list of favorites. Although riddled with romantic clichés that hopeless-romantic readers can't seem to get enough of, these clichés are approached in an original way that toys with your emotions and keeps you reading start to finish. It is rare that I find a story that makes me grin like an idiot, unable to control my outward emotions as I become absorbed in the lives of the characters, but this is surely one of those stories. Despite only a few chapters, the author creates well thought out characters and a page-turning plot with a satisfying storyline from start tofinish.
Well, this manga certainly had potential, until the finale came. We have a quite typical setting of âboy gets bullied because heâs gayâ. With it we have bundled another quite typical ârough looking but actually caringâ character archetype. We even get the clichĂ© âdelinquent-looking person picks up a kitten in rainâ scene, but as the manga is self-aware about that and acknowledges that was corny, Iâll let that one pass. While the main themes here are nothing new, they are executed quite well, with the characters having some actual characters, and for having just few chapters the story actually develops quite nicely. That is, as mentioned, untilthe conclusion. Be warned that there are spoilers beyond this point. So, the main point this manga is trying to make is that itâs stupid to bully someone just because theyâre gay and defend it by saying you were afraid that they could have the hots for you. Then it ends up with the supportive friend with no indication they were gay suddenly making out, going out and sexing with the previously bullied gay protagonist, ironically making the point the story is against actually true in a way. This manga would be much better if the supportive friend had stayed exactly as that. Thereâs plenty of BL about friend of gay protagonist turning gay (probably literally hundreds of those, maybe more), but not so much manga about gay protagonist that doesnât immediately get canonically shipped with the secondary protagonist. Was it really that hard to not make such generic conclusion that everyone saw coming but doesnât really make sense beyond the âitâs BL manga so everyone needs to be gayâ concept? Was the whole chapter thatâs just explicit, porn-like sex scene really necessary, despite the previous chapters being nicely wholesome? Did the author really have that little faith the story would sell without including something horny? The extra chapter that doesnât have anything to do with the main story (âYouthful Loveâ) isnât interesting at all, so that isnât really helping. Overall, itâs a fine BL manga, but at most average manga in general.
After dropping out of middle school following the spread of rumors that shattered his reputation and confidence, 16-year-old Nakaba Endou has become a NEET. He spends his days wallowing in his bedroom until his mother pulls some strings to get him a job at his uncle's convenience store. Wanting to reclaim his life, Nakaba accepts the position as a part-timer, but he soon finds that the job is more difficult than he initially believed. In particular, one of his coworkersâKouhei Yamaiâis unreasonably mean and critical toward him. Despite his brutish demeanor, Yamai unknowingly reveals a soft spot to Nakaba when he rescues a stray cat from being run over. Though he is hesitant to get closer to his coworker, Nakaba cannot help but fall for him. Just as Yamai begins to warm up to him, Nakaba's past resurfaces, threatening their delicate relationship. It has quite a few cliches, but this story pulls them off in quite an appealing manner. Its quite simple, which makes this story a fairy light hearted read (minus a few...parts), The artwork is flipping adorable and the characters are super cute. They seem to have the structure of a proper relationship, but dont completely fit within the stereotypical "seme" and "uke" molds. If they were straight, i'd do both of the mains. The artist drew them to contrast each other perfectly, but still appeal to the audience, which I loved. The handled their sexualities in such a realistic and appealing manner (and italso aided the plot wonderfully) that I must applaud the mangaka. This is a wonderful manga and I recommend it to many people. I really wish that it was longer.
This is the type of manga that I really like to read. I found that Konbini-kun is a sweet manga, with a pretty good plot. Before reading it I might have guessed there would have been some cringy situations and same olâ character types, but that was not the case. All I felt reading this manga was empathy, sadness and joy. There were definitely some clichĂ© like moments, but the way this is written nothing screamed clichĂ© to me. Iâm actually amazed at how much I liked reading it. This is going 100% in my top favourite mangas. Itâs just so sweet.
