Story (6/10) : Probably this manga's weakpoint in my eyes. The story is interesting but becomes engaging a bit late in my opinion. It was kind of hard to follow during the first chapters, and I didn't quite know where we were headed. Glad I stuck with it though because it gets better and better as the story progresses. Art (9/10) : The art might be my favorite thing about this manga : some action shots might be a bit messy sometimes, but the art is usually truly great. It's a style I haven't really seen anywhere else either, so it was really refreshing. I especiallyloved the character designs. Character (8/10) : Not only are they looking great, but the characters are really likeable! Most important characters have their goals and personalities fleshed out so the reader can relate to them when needed. I really found myself feeling for them during hard times! Enjoyment (7/10) : Because I had my struggles with story early on, I didn't enjoy myself a whole lot at first, but I stuck with it, and it gradually got better. By the end of the manga, I was really invested in both the story and the characters. It's worth to note that this manga can be really funny at times, especially through the mains characters' unique relationships and quirks. Overall (7/10) : Donten ni Warau is a very unique manga, and as such I can only recommend you read it . It might not be one of my favorite reads, but it sure was an enjoyable one.
In the dawn of the Meiji period, the Gokumonjou, an inescapable prison, has been established in the middle of an enormous lake to counter the soaring crime rates the new era has brought. Serving as the ferrymen are the famous Kumou brothers: the eccentric family head, Tenka; the reckless but noble second son, Soramaru; and the guileless youngest, Chuutarou. In spite of their grim work, the three lead relatively peaceful lives in the ever-cloudy town of Oumi, together with their housekeeper, Shirasu Kinjou. But buried in the long history of Oumi is the legend of the terrifying Orochi, a serpentine beast that awakens every three hundred years in a human vessel. Unbeknownst to Soramaru and Chuutarou, the actual job of the Kumou family is to seal the Orochi away before it fully revives—or the world will be plunged into destruction. Amid the monster's next resurrection, the Kumou family must find the resolve to keep laughing under the clouds. [Written by MAL Rewrite] Included one-shot: Volume 1: Utakata ni Warau (2 parts)
Story: Wacky, but enjoyable. The plot doesn't hold up if you think about it too hard, but the uniqueness of it is refreshing. The blend of history and myth is interesting. Characters: The characters are what makes this story stand out. Tenka is the charismatic and self-sacrificing older brother, Soramaru is the angsty middle child (enough said), and Chuutarou is the innocent youngest child. In my opinion, what the manga had to say about brotherhood was more interesting than the whole orochi thing. Art: The art is great! What stood out to me is how the Kumos all actually looked like brothers without appearing identical. Overall: Enjoyable, underrated, but perhaps a little forgettable
