I LOVED THIS MANGA. I have always been rather reluctant to try Shounen-Ai as i pictured it to be terribly frivolous and fluffy and something i would never be emotionally invested in. HOWEVER, this went against every expectation i had with its compelling leads and original concept. Sakurai Kazuaki aka Sakurai-san aka The sexy seme, is a 38 year old workoholic with no life really. He wants to try gardening in an attempt to spruce his dull life up but that fails due to his lack of skill but manages to be the medium through which he meets Minagawa Youichi. This happens as heis walking and bumps into Youichi which results in his magazine to be destroyed. Aloof and distant, Youichi takes Sakurai-san to his traditional Japanese mansion in which he lives with his 2 cousins, in order to offer him the same magazine he posseses. Youichi is 19 years old and an arts student and Sakurai-san takes an instant dislike to his cold (not in a tsundere way) demeanor. Then, after several coincidences that brings them together, they start to form a special connection through which they learn more about their shortcomings. Youichi starts to care and stand up for others including his cousins and Sakurai-san realises that he has to real connection to anyone until Youichi points this out. As their characters develop for the better, their attraction becomes undeniable. Sakurai-san is unable to comprehend falling in love with a boy 19 years his junior and Youichi is unable to articulate his feelings as he had never been in love until he met Sakurai-san. One is conflicted and the other, a never-been-kissed-virgin , attempt to go against the cultural/social odds as their deep, deep love cannot be supressed ,hehe. I really love that the stereotype of rapish seme and the tsundere uke were not present as it is with the Yaoi genre. Sakurai-san is caring and respectful towards Youichi and Youichi is genuine and passionate with Sakurai-san. The character development, the chemistry and the art was just fantastic and i want to re-read it soon.
On a train ride home one night, corporate slave Kazuaki Sakurai has an unpleasant encounter with another passenger, ruining Sakurai's outfit and documents from work. When the apathetic passengerâYouichi Minagawaâinvites him to his residence to make amends for the incident, Sakurai goes without protest. Aside from being a college student, Youichi turns out to own a huge house, which is something unusual for his age. While it piques Sakurai's interest, their unexpected connection does not last long after the compromise was made, and Sakurai returns to his recurring dull life. However, fate seems to have other plans for Sakurai. Despite not intending to return, he often finds himself back in Youichi's house, and the occurrences that follow draw them closer to each other. In turn, Sakurai starts to take a deeper interest in the young man, while Youichi begins to display a rare side of himself ever since the office worker's appearance. [Written by MAL Rewrite]
There is one thing I would like to change about this manga and that is for me to read the manga before I watch the film, because I did it the other way around and that was not a good idea. The plot developed very nicely with a little bit more revealed every chapter. There are significant differences between the manga and the film in which the film is nowhere even close to how great the manga is and leaves out a lot of details, so I was glad to have the manga shed some light on some of the relationships and histories of thecharacters, both main and supporting. Speaking of the characters, I liked how no one was forgotten. The author went well into every one of them, revealing key points regarding what they were doing there, how they got there, and where they might head to. Every character was well thought and had a purpose, which I appreciate a lot and made reading very smooth. The focus shifted from one character to another, something that's pretty new to me. I don't think I read a manga before where this much focus was put on the side characters and I'm all in for it. It was a very nice experience and I'm glad this is the first manga to have experienced it on. The art was very pretty, but more than anything I loved looking at Youichi and Sakurai being close. Them hugging or kissing was so, so nice to look at. Probably because of how the plot advanced it was so much more impactful than other mangas I read and I loved it a lot. A few times I just stared at the page, going over the lines and taking in the image of affection in front of me. 'Hana wa Saku ka' was so pleasant to read, I enjoyed it so much. I loved the main characters and the way the plot unfolded so nicely.
