Salad Days is quite the cute little romance series. :) I found it rather enjoyable and couldn't help but find the rest of the books after I first stumbled upon them. The short, individual stories also mean you don't necessarily have to read the books in order either, or keep up with all the small details.
Salad Days is similar to one-shot, except a huge collection of them. Salad Days include many many short stories filled together, each dealing with different things in romance. Some has unrequited love, others were forced to be together due to drunken parents making a pact, etc. The best part about Salad Days is it's short length in all it's stories. There are many romance manga where it feels like it drags on a little longer than it should have, but that never happens in Salad Days. Don't get me wrong, it doesn't mean that Salad Days is less romantic or sweet as the other romancemanga, because Salad Days is extremely good. Some people might find the manga confusing at first, because the characters changes after a couple of chapters. However, as you keep reading it, you'd find that actually almost all the characters are connected, and there are some recurring characters. For example, one of my favorite couple, they start off hating each other, but with each set of stories, they get closer and closer with each other. Excellent read, one of my favorite romance manga. Highly recommended, 9/10 Overall.
Love is something that is fresh...like salads. Days when people experience love are days that will never be forgotten... These precious memories are "salad days." Salad Days is a collection of various 1~3 chapters long stories about people and their first love, or finding new love. (Source: MU)
Salad Days is a compilation of stories. Though, there seems to be a main story to it-- in which the writer focuses on and continue, since most of the stories are one-shots. The stories are sweet and great. They give you this heart-warming sensations and some stories could bring tears to your eyes. The art is also wonderful. I think the artist did great on the shadings and bringing the art to seem so alive. One of my all-time favorite manga. I would gladly reread it and reminisce on the days where I first read this manga.
First of all, yes, the art work is not great. It is after all from 1999. The scans could be a lot better. HOWEVER, the stories are great. The mangaka is a bloody genius at telling them. Overall the stories cover everything from the ordinary falling-in-love one-shot type, to the mystical, to the "how do you recover from losing the one you love." As the other reviewers have said, these are mostly 1-3 chapter stories, but, there is one story that covers 10 (approximately) years in the lives of two characters, Yuki and Futaba, beginning with the day the first met. If you read nothing else, read these chapters. By themselves they tell a story better than most all mangas of the type. The pertinent chapters are: 24-26, 29-30, 53-54, 60, 67, 75-76, 83, 91, 102-104.
