A high school setting, a sudden confession from a persistent guy, and the whirlwind of young love that ensues. This sounds like every cliche shoujo premise you've ever read, doesn't it? But while the plot is simplistic and predictable, My Hero actually succeeds in making the same old cliches a little more palatable because it does something very different. The male lead in this manga is not popular, he's not a bishounen—he doesn't fit any of the usual cliches. Instead, he's the dorky, earnest, hardworking guy that isn't very popular. In fact, he's the type of character you'd see in a love triangle in one ofthe more popular shoujos—and he would be the one that loses. This type of character always loses. In regards to the heroine, she's not particularly exceptional herself, but she's does give the male lead a chance without dismissing him. Granted she's a little taken aback by his enthusiasm, and sometimes a little on the tsundere side, she's also very earnest herself. As a couple, they have good chemistry and are easy to root for. Since it's such a short story, the plot itself basically follows the two of them. There's no exceptional line of character development—there's not much time for it, although it does exist. Sometimes the skipping in the timeline can be a little confusing, but considering the material, it's not too hard to catch up and understand what's going on. The art is fairly average by my assessments. The lines are clean, however, and there's no exceptionally wonky body proportions. Considering that the male lead is fairly plain, this isn't going to be an "eye candy" manga. My Hero proves a refreshing read as something that carries none of the unnecessarily angsty obstacles. It's straightforward, it's fluffy, light, and enjoyable. Don't expect anything too deep going in and you won't be disappointed.
It's been a month since she entered high school, and Jun has started noticing a particular guy hanging around her classroom. When he suddenly confesses, she's not sure where she even knows him from--or how she feels about him. But come what may, he seems pretty intent on sticking around... (Source: Which Scanlations)
My Hero. Sounds like a cliche title doesn't it? I'm not sure how I stumbled upon this, but I'm glad I did! I'm just basing this on the 7 chapters I read, because I could not for the life of me find the LAST chapter. Brb, gonna go cry. Anyways, Story; +9/10 It was incredibly light-hearted and just plain hilarious some parts! I actually chuckled a few times, too. I don't think I've laughed this much at a manga before. This story had a good feel to it, and I think the author did a fantabulous job with it! Art; +9/10 I really liked how this time, this guy is notthe bishounen like most of the guys in mangas usually are. Though he's not a bishie, he's just adorable and I actually envy the main girl T___T . The art was to my liking, yes! Character; +10/10 I loved the characters in this! I especially liked the male lead's grandpa, haha too funny! (Gotta read it to laugh, hehe.) The girl was nice, and the male was just greeeat! I should stop fangirling over him now should'nt I? Enjoyment; +10/10 I really enjoyed this manga! I haven't read a good one in a long time and I think this manga really deserves more credit than it should I hope you enjoy reading this manga as much as I did!
I was a little intrigued by the beginning of this manga because of one thing: instead of the female protagonist being in love with a seemingly unattainable boy, there was a strange boy pursuing the protagonist. And he wasn't a complete weirdo, either; he acted nervous in a very cute way and obviously adored her. I wondered very much how things would turn out. At first she's quite skeptical of Yutarou, as she doesn't know him and is creeped out by him staring at her all the time. His courage in asking her out while being very visibly nervous is endearing, though. While he isn't themost popular and handsome guy in the class, she starts to find that he possesses many good qualities. He's awkward, a klutz, and stumbles with his words, but there's something about him... I was ready to be doused with shoujo cliches while reading this, but I was surprised to find that there were very few. In fact, I spent most of my time laughing at the funny things that happened. A boy like Yutarou and can really get himself into some comical situations, and the practical Jun's reactions to them are priceless. Also, being a shoujo lover at heart, I was always taken aback by how sweet Yutarou's actions were. This manga was just a bundle of cuteness and giggles. The two main characters were great. Jun is by no means the prettiest girl around, but with her simple straight black hair and clear eyes, she's a beauty in Yutarou's eyes. I would certainly want to be friends with someone as levelheaded as she is. She wasn't swayed by the most popular and handsome guy in class, either, which is something new for a shoujo protagonist. Yutarou is also a sweetheart. I like how he doesn't have hair that is typical to main male characters in shoujo. It's cut quite close to his head and very light-colored. At first I was a little quizzical about his unwavering love for Jun. It seemed to have come out of thin air and have no reason behind it, but seeing how he acted for the rest of the story, it looked like he'd do anything and everything for Jun. He wasn't trying to make her happy for himself, either; he liked her enough to want to make her happy even at the cost of his happiness. Furthermore, he acted adorable. I really liked how the artwork was, too. In addition to distinct-looking characters, their expressions conveyed emotions so perfectly I was taken aback by them. The mangaka really knew what she was doing. The rest of the art can be seen as typical to shoujo manga, but I loved it anyway. The faces were the best. As you can probably see, I love this manga and was fangirling over it while reading. There were few parts I disliked (a particular complication was not thought out very well and the ending had a humorous twist that I didn't want), but otherwise I fully enjoyed the romance spanned in eight chapters. It was long enough to be satisfying and I do recommend it to anyone who's interested.
My Hero! was just what I've been looking for. Lately, I've found myself dropping shoujo manga out of disappointment and turning to shounen and josei manga. I'm glad that I was able to find My Hero! The manga is about an ordinary girl named Jun Okamoto. For some reason that she can't comprehend, a guy named Yutarou at her school keeps watching her at break and apparently is interested in her. Even though it is unclear whether Jun even has feelings for him, he persistently continues to go after her, which makes her dumbfounded. His extreme persistence is basically what makes the manga. The art is satisfactoryand very cute. I like the characters' different facial expressions and also like how Yutarou has a really short hairstyle, unique and different from the normal long hair that guys have in shoujo manga. The characters are excellent! I like Jun because she's not that typical ditzy and naive girl protagonist (that I can't stand). Yutarou is just plain hilarious. This manga isn't extremely profound or anything, but I thought it was cute and well done for a short manga. I normally don't like short manga because it's usually ... not that good. If you're looking for a cute and short manga that is worth reading, this one will "cut the cake" for you.
- short, sweet, and simple, though too simple for my taste. there's not much to it, plot or character-wise. one could find the mcs to be some bit endearing, seeing as they are flustered youths; the mmc is definitely sweet with his open affection - cute premise! i read this because of "ore monogatari!!," so i generally like premises like these (even looking back at my reading history). but, going back to the first point, i think this one might have been better off as a oneshot. - reading "my hero!" filled my time nicely, and i can't say i regret it (especially since it's soshort), but i also can't say i'd look back to it at all.
