Usagi Otoko Tora Otoko is one rare hidden gem when it comes to BL/Yaoi genre. After re-reading the manga numerous times, I love the characters much more each time. The story revolves around Dr. Uzuki, a general surgical resident, who saves Nonami, yakuza gang leader, who's left to bleed to death on the street from a gunshot wound which leads to all the drama after their meeting. What I genuinely adored about the story was how their affection blossomed for each other over time with proper interactions versus the usual trope where the seme forces himself on the uke. Their interaction always leaves you feelingwarm and fuzzy so you cannot help but root for them. The character, dialogue, artwork, and overall enjoyment makes this a piece that I keep coming back to. I wish that the manga continued with more volumes and we got to see more of Uzuki and Nonami.
Dr. Uzuki, who works at a university teaching hospital, comes across in an alley and saves the Yakuza member Nonami after he's been shot. The next day, when Nonami shows up at the hospital, Uzuki is scared that he's come to make sure of his silence after he's seen the gunshot wound. But actually, Nonami, who misheard Uzuki's name and has mistaken him for a woman named "Suzuki", has forced a younger yakuza brother into being admitted into the hospital and order to find this woman, and they've started to search for this 'Suzuki'... The timid rabbit-type doctor and the Yakuza with the chisled strength of a tiger - a law of the jungle love! (Source: Nakama)
Story: Love the author's approach on the story, generally most yaoi themed plots tend to start with a clichéd forceful way of romance for some reason and even though I do enjoy those stories it always bugs me at some point. This one on the other hand is a really sweetly written, although with cliché moments it's well executed. The flow and the atmosphere of the story is nice and enjoyable. I also really liked the 'rabbit making rice cakes on the moon' and the 'tiger being restless' on his back references. So 7/10 Art: I don't really prefer small petite ukes but the character ofthe Dr. is written in a way that the design suits him, all in all the art is really nice, simple and crisp. Loved how the author did the transitions between the human to animal form, it was really cute and it added a wonderful flavour to the story. So 8/10. Character: The characters are well written. Both the Dr.'s and Yakuza's character development is well paced, the development of mutual understanding between them is also well done. Every character added a certain flavour to the story even the cat played a very important role and I love how it's shown. So 7/10 Enjoyment: Enjoyable sweet yakuza themed story. So 7/10. Overall: 7.2/10.
