I was kind of confused regarding the disparity I witnessed between the reviews and the score, where the reviews are almost praising it to be the most original story Jump had in years (which it is not, btw), while the score reflects the complete opposite. I read the story, and I think the score gives a more accurate rating for the manga that is B no Seisen. Starting with a brief summary of what this manga is about, it is the story of a pianist, Ichirou Yaso, a failed pianist to be exact. He was once a prodigy who faced a crushing defeat from one ofhis opponents, which left him leaving the way of piano and distancing himself from the musical world. That is until he encounters a man claiming to be Beethoven. Beethoven claims that he got reincarnated into modern-day Japan, when he was on his deathbed just moments ago in Vienna. Stuff happened, and Beethoven got to witness the unpolished talent that Yaso is and decided to become a mentor for him. And then the remaining story starts from there. So my opinion regarding the manga is that it is boring AND badly written, the deadliest wombo-combo the author can hit you with. Getting on with completing this was almost a task. There are a bunch of flaws in the story, the first one being the protagonist. Regarding his character and the way his background is handled, him being a failed pianist who is now making a comeback isn't exactly rare, we have seen those plot points before, and I think it is a very hasty way to introduce depth to a character and make readers care about it early on without much investment, which obviously did not work in this case because there wasn't much follow-up. Another thing is about the imbalance between the characters, Yaso and Beethoven, where the main character, Yaso, falls by the wayside, almost overshadowed by the dominating character that is Beethoven. It's not necessarily true that the dominance of Beethoven stems from him being a very good character, it's more so due to the sheer focus on him during the early stages of the story and him being a mysterious piece, so that even when they tried to tone it down and give a chance to the main character, the manga was already his. There was also a point in the story where they tried to introduce Beethoven's past into the story, and at that stage I had already lost complete interest in any of the characters. Another flaw being that whole alternate plot point of some shady organisation trying to find Beethoven, which in the end got reduced to two people trying to babysit. Take almost any event of the manga, and you can find flaws in it. Talking about the characters, I don't think other than two pivotal characters, there were many worth mentioning. The character of Ai Aigou would have been debatable if their conflict didn't get limited to a conversation. The antagonist was bland. The design for him was generic, so I didn't expect too much from him anyway. Any other character was nonessential to the story, so there is no point in talking about them. Art was fine. Closing off this review, I think the cancellation was kind of deserved and explainable, I have seen better things getting axed.
The door of fate now opens... Piano prodigy Ichirou Yaso left the world of classical music after an incident at a competition. He vowed to never play the piano again, but now that he has a mentor claiming to be Beethoven, it may be time for his redemption! One of the more experimental or unique mangas I've read. As a music enthusiast, I always pick the once in a blue moon mangas that come up in Shonen Jump related to the topic. I remember 6Ps by Mapollo as the piano manga. Star of Beethoven brings a really unique concept of a story, the art, specially showing the times when Yaso or Beethoven play the Piano is really good. But the overall execution of the story is just, fine I guess. NGL I do like it, but it was just not bringing enough numbers or ratings for it to not be cancelled. So ifyou're a music, specially classical music or piano enthusiast, definitely check this manga out, you'll find the references and the philosophy of music interesting. I don't think anyone else, specially the normies will find this compelling.
Star of Beethoven was the most original manga that this magazine had since Psych House (two precious stones of this magazine), and which unfortunately did not see the light of a 4Âș volume... this manga has a brilliant and very curious premise, as well as an incredible comic that disputes a lot with the author of "MamaYuyu" - Yoshihiko Hayashi (ironically both have Hayashi in the name). I will miss this manga a lot, because as a lover and professional in the area of music this manga made me feel "at home". Beethoven is an incredible and very charismatic 2Âș protagonist, which further enriched the plot, but Yaso was not such a flashy protagonist (which I think was one of the reasons for the cancellation). I will really miss this manga in the magazine, which showed with this last chapter the great potential it had.
