One word immediately came to mind once I'd finished this manga: Beautiful. This is the simple story of an unlikely friendship between a lonely girl and an old painter, as they think about the world and how it moves around them. I love the art direction of the story, wherein the old man's memories are intercut with the present day story, and hold a more traditionally painted style--with graphite texture, sketch lines, and so forth. Not only does this work to distinguish them when they overlap, but also beautifully depicts the feeling of distant memories, how they become less tightly formed and hazier the older they get. Themanga is only 14 chapters long, so please give it a read when you're next in the mood for something bittersweet and gentle--I promise it will be worth your time!
A lonely old painter and a girl with no friends. This is a story about two people who don't fit in, and how they learn how to love the world as it is. (Source: Futabasha, translated)
Beautifully sad, but an essential read. When past memories bring remorse, life can feel meaningless. Yet sometimes, we can still find happiness in those lost moments. As many have said, it’s not about how many loved ones we’ve lost, it’s about how we remember them. A similar quote appeared in "Sayonara Eri" too, when I read it yesterday. I became emotional while reading. I was reliving my own past. I felt that same remorse. But unlike the painter in this beautiful manga, I haven’t fully come to terms with my past. That’s why I connected with it so deeply, because sometimes, letting go and acknowledging the memoriesis a way of living too. I’m amazed that this little 14 chapters manga, with only 78 completed reads, 14 currently reading, and a total of 198 members, with even the score marked N/A, could hit me this hard. I loved the painterly art style. I don’t think anything else could have made such an impact. I absolutely loved it. If you’re reading this review, please read it.
