The manga for Cowboy Bebop is completely different from the anime. It mostly shows the bounty hunters doing other stuff and sitting around than trying to hunt for bounties. If you read the Shooting Star manga, (which comes first) you would see the point in what I am talking about. They actually hunt for bounties. Story: 5/10 The story may seem impressive at the start, but it shows a completely different setting of how the bounty hunters try to hunt down bounties like I said up top. It's more forgettable than the anime, but it doesn't really show romance. And if this even took place after theanime, why doesn't Spike never talk about Julia, Vicious or Vincent? Also, why doesn't Jet talk about his ex-love? And why doesn't Faye talk about Wintey like in the anime? And since why does Ed have a friend? The story really explains on how to be lazy and all, but in Volume 3 they soon set out to hunt for bounties after the warm start-up in Volume 2. They get new bounty hunters, some are bossy, some are hyper, and some are merciless. Which doesn't thrill me but might thrill people who've seen the anime of course. Overall the story could've been better. It does get boring when you continue reading the manga, but it just was O.K. I guess. Art 7/10 The art, I guess isn't too bad. It still needed to suit the story more I mean look at manga(s) like Full Moon o Sagashite! They do that. But not this one, it was just nice, but could've been better. Character 6/10 The characters were O.K. they are a lot much better and have a lot more personality in the anime than they do in the manga. They were kind of OOC despite the fact that the manga was created before the anime started like in the Shooting Stars manga, but Spike could've been a little more mischevious, Jet could've talked more, Faye could've acted more tomboy-ish and Ed could've been a little more hyper than that. Enjoyment: 5/10 After I heard that the Shooting Star manga and Cowboy Bebop weren't as good as the anime or at least O.K., I decided to give it a try and see if I like them. I only read a little of Shooting Star, but Cowboy Bebop, I never thought I would get this bored of it. It was way too short and I know the first manga is going to be short too. Actually, I get tiresome reading any book period especially when you're at school, but books like Full Moon o Sagashite or Fruits Basket keep me enthused and waiting to read more. Overall: 5/10 Cowboy Bebop seemed to have an interesting start, but from the other manga they created before this, I'm sure it's more interesting and suited to the series. The problem is the art and characters, I mean, Look at manga(s) like Lupin III or Samurai Champloo (at least I haven't read it yet)... they don't have a problem copying the art or characters from the anime into the manga. Look, I'm sorry if I gave this manga too many titles, but I recommend you to maybe try something different like Samurai Champloo or something.
Spike, Jet, Faye and Ed—cowboys on the new frontier. Together this band of interplanetary bounty hunters takes on the jobs that anyone in their right mind would turn down. (Source: Tokyopop)
Did you find my rating strange? My 10 here is largely due to the nostalgia I felt reading this manga. It's been a while since I watched the anime, and the manga gave me that same feeling I felt when I watched the animated version. This rating may be strange to some, but for me, it's completely valid, because this manga features different stories than the anime. The manga's content is different from the anime's, and in my opinion, it further expands the bounty hunting universe. The focus here isn't on the characters' relationships and feelings (as it is in much of the anime), but on thebounty hunts. This may be why the audience didn't buy into the idea conveyed here, but for me, this manga aims to expand on the characters' daily lives. This is so well-crafted that even if I haven't seen confirmation of whether it's canon or not, it's entirely possible, given that the work takes place around the middle of the anime (when all the characters are reunited). The art might be strange to some, but for me, it was a nice experience. As different as the art may be compared to the anime, I still like how the artwork is drawn here. Furthermore, as a manga collector and having the physical version of the manga in Portuguese, which is quite old (I wasn't even born when it was released, if I'm not mistaken), the nostalgic feeling of reading the physical version was very, very rewarding. I recommend it to anyone who, like me, is a fan of Cowboy Bebop, because this manga is faithful to the original work but also has new stories to enjoy.
After reading this I really have to wonder just how bad inflation is in the Cowboy Bebop universe that the blow through their money so damn fast. This has 11 chapters, all of them showcasing the Bebop crew doing their jobs mostly competently, with some hijinks of course. The two chapters in volume 3 are longer and more fleshed out, and I wish the other ones had been as well as they're by far the best written stories of the bunch. And honestly, that's really all that can be said about this manga. It's a short sweet manga of characters you know doing the thing youwant to see them doing. It's additional content supplemental to the main show that would not have been able to be stretched enough to make full episodes out of them, and that's what I want from my supplemental material. Characterisation is solid, they crew act like the crew you know, there's some small bits added to their history such as where Faye learned to hustle, and some info on Ed's backstory, but nothing earthshattering. I do like how each crew member has equal time in most of the stories, though a couple very much focus around one person, usually Spike. While I would not say this is a must read, if you enjoy Cowboy Bebop this is just more of it, and that's really all we're asking from little additional things like this.
