What a lovely story! When I heard the premise of My Instructor Won't Yield I had to pick it up. A guy falling in love with his driving instructor? How novel. However, it does very well to maintain interest beyond its initial grab. In fact, my one main criticism is that it didn't use the driving gimmick *enough.* Though this is obviously subjective, I think the leads have a lot of chemistry together and their relationship development is very sweet. I find it incredibly endearing that when Chiba sees a stoic-looking man in a suit get into his car he has certain expectations, only for that business-like manto actually be a socially awkward shoujo mangaka with a severe anxiety problem. Yaotome's awkwardness clashes with Chiba's outgoing personality for funny but charming hijinks. I'm also always happy to see adult characters, especially in romance. It's the perfect length too. It understands you can't get a lot out of this premise but makes every single one of those pages count. I do see the argument that they could have gone more in depth about certain plot points, and while I wouldn't have complained if that were the case, I don't think it was necessary to do so, and I understand why certain things happened or were resolved at a quicker pace. The more bite-sized length serves the tone, in my opinion. It somehow managed to leave every chapter off on a compelling enough cliffhanger that I couldn't put it down and stayed up late to read the entire thing in one night. Again, my one complaint is that they don't spend enough time driving. So sweet, silly, charming, and fun. I was kicking my feet and giggling, and that's saying something considering I'm not even attracted to men or a romantic.
Chiba's kind manner, clear guidance, and pretty face make him easily the favorite driving instructor of every female student at the school where he works. But, while he'll play up his charms to get good reviews, Chiba is diligent about politely but firmly rejecting all romantic advances. Yet his well-crafted persona will be put to the test when he's matched up with the mysterious Yaotome, a new student gaining a reputation of his own as the "Sharp-Suited Prince," because he comes to every driving lesson way overdressed. Despite his cool looks and demeanor, Yaotome can hardly compose himself when Chiba begins their lesson. An after-hours encounter reveals that Yaotome is actually a manga artist...and that's not his only secret! (Source: Kodansha USA)
Heads up about the "Mixed feelings" rating: i DID enjoy this manga a lot! But by the description of MAL's rec rating, "mixed feelings" made the most sense. As a big fan of another of Kingyobachi Deme's stories, finding out they also did BL was a nice surprise! I also thought the driving school plot was something unique, so i really wanted to read it. The story is simple and without much conflict. I was actually grateful for this, since the vast majority of BL has a lot of misunderstandings and extended drama, so reading something calmer felt like a good chance of pace. The art is verycute, and the characters are not incredibly developed, but enough for us to get to know their likes and motivations. I just wish there would've been at least one scene where the cat shows up, since it was Yaotome's main motive to learn how to drive! There is a part where the story seems to suddenly disconnect, but gets explained a few pages later. I thought this was an odd choice of how to present the situation, since it was quite confusing at first, but just kept on reading and it cleared itself. While this manga is nothing mindblowing, it is a pretty cute story, and ideal for those who would rather read a milder BL without explicit scenes.
