My heart is overflowing with warmth after finishing this beautiful masterpiece of BL manhwa. With only 70 chapters this is a short read that I definitely recommend to everyone! It‘s a realistic story about two completely opposite high school boys growing closer and falling in love. I love the realistic take on what it’s like to be a homosexual man in countries like korea and that in the end even obstacles set by our society cannot stop true love from blossoming and surviving between two men. Truly a 10/10 story that leaves a sweet taste in your mouth after finishing!
Such an emotional roller coaster, so worth it. I usually have issues with stories that are described as "realistic". Sometimes they are so down-to-earth that they don't have any sense of sentimentalism at all… so I was kinda worried. But, oh my god, Our Youth was such an experience. It held so many feelings. It's a slow burn that will leave your heart aching to the mere acknowledgements of their feelings; it's all so subtle yet so revealing. They're loving each other like they're whisper screaming— it shows, it doesn't tell every time. This story is heavy on longing, on wanting, and aching; so if youlove these themes, you'll have a RIDE. The colors? The pacing? It's all so intentional just to build up this sense of nostalgia, this "blink and you'll miss it" kind of feeling. I've just reread this story after a year since I've finished reading it for the first time and gosh, I still felt the lingering sense of bittersweetness and apprehension from the first time, even though I remembered how it was gonna go. This time around I also paid attention to the details and it made the story so beautiful, there's a specific scene that has such a "fever dream" touch to it and it's devastating. (Oh, one thing I also enjoyed about this story, is that it isn't tactlessly painful; it isn't playing around with your feelings, everything is very much covered to not leave you hanging. So don't be scared haha) Everything is very clearly purposeful; the author wanted the reader to feel things, don't be shy to it! A must-read, it'll squeeze your heart.
Jinhyuk is a model student. Studious. Hardworking. He can't wait till the day he has his own place and his own car. He knows that the only way he can achieve his dreams is to go to a top-tier university. He's fine with his repetitive daily routine of school and studying. That is, until one day, while taking a shortcut through a rougher neighborhood, he sees a kid that looks familiar. That kid...they're in the same homeroom together, aren't they? But he's not the kind of person Jinhyuk would get mixed up with. He's the kind of person that grows up to be a lowlife. Jinhyuk was raised better than that. But...that kid, what's his name...Heechan was it? He's getting beat up by his dad. No, just keep walking. He should have nothing to do with Heechan, but something seems to keep making their paths cross... This feeling of ennui that Jinhyuk has, is Heechan what he needs to shake it? Our youth was honestly, such a good read. And, that might be an understatement. When I first came across it, I wasn't expecting much, but the refreshing title and the simple yet charming art style pulled me in. To this day, I have not yet read a piece of work with an equivalent, realistic outlook on relationship growth, while also targeting the characters personal issues, that reflect societal flaws. I loved the way the characters' personalities, emotions and views were expressed. The pacing was amazing, truly, accurate, showcasing the doubt and fear, but also the longing and constant care caused by a person's first love. I don'twant to spoil anything, so I am keeping this short. It might not be everyone's cup of tea, but I genuinely think there is a lot to enjoy in this work. I undoubtedly recommend it, and would again and again, especially if you are looking for a story you will be able to feel, more than just read. I hope you are able to enjoy it, as much as I did.
