● Plot Volcanic Age follows Joo Seo Cheon, a fourth-generation disciple of the Mount Hua Sect. After a devastating war between the Dark Heaven Sect and the rest of the martial world, countless lives are lost. Filled with regret at the end of his life, Joo Seo Cheon dies -only to regress back to his younger self. Given a second chance, he decides to seize every opportunity he once missed and use his knowledge of the future to prevent the rise of the Dark Heaven Sect and the tragic losses the martial world previously suffered. ● My Opinion I’ve been reading this manhwa for about six years, so it’shonestly sad to see it end. At one point, it was my favorite series. I would often let chapters marinate up and then binge reread it again, and I always enjoyed coming back to it. For me, the beginning alone is almost worth reading the series. It starts incredibly strong with great pacing and excitement. Unfortunately, I do think the quality gradually drops toward the later parts of the story. The translation quality also varies quite a bit, though overall it stayed decent until the end. Since I started reading this when I was around 15, I have mixed feelings about it now. My younger self would probably rate it an 8–9/10. It has a strong and cool main character fighting for justice, which made it very enjoyable at the time, and I would have highly recommended it without hesitation. Looking at it now, without nostalgia attached, I’m less certain. While the story begins amazingly, the quality slowly declines after around chapter 200. That said, despite the drop in quality, I grew really attached to the characters. The final chapter was actually very satisfying and left me feeling happy with how the story concluded. ● My Rating Because of my personal attachment, I’d give it an 8/10 - it holds a special place in my heart. Objectively, I think it’s closer to a solid 7/10. ● All in All Overall, I would still recommend giving Volcanic Age a try. It’s not a series that will appeal to everyone, but its strong beginning, memorable characters, and satisfying ending make it worth experiencing.
Ju Seo Cheon, a man who survives the age of war through sheer luck and becomes the elder of the Hwasan faction, only to live a life full of regrets and doubts. As he lies on his death bed, waiting for the inevitable, he is returned to the past... (Source: Kakao Entertainment Corp., translated)
A placid manhwa good to read after reading “Return of the Mount Hua Sect” or other easier wuxia/oriental fantasies. The story. The story follows typical oriental fantasies (Jianghu, Wulin, etc.) from Mount Hua sect. Just like any other reincarnation manhwas it follows clichés but in an unpredictable way. The story makes sense and is convincing. It rarely depends on luck. The story gets a bit less interesting as it goes to the ending, but the ending was rewarding enough to recommend. There are a lot of archaic terminologies which makes the story harder to understand, which is why I suggest reading this after an introductory manhwa or novel. This is possible because most wuxia novels follow the world made by Jin Yong. The art. The art is not the best as it gets boring when there’s a fighting scene. This is not my subjective criticism as this is what most comments were talking about too. However it’s not that bad and it gets better so this wasn’t much of a problem. Most importantly the girls are pretty. The characters. The characters are charming and attractive. It was shocking how different the characters were expressed, although they are mostly the characters from the same families in “Return of the Mount Hua Sect” (or other Jin-yong influenced wuxia novels). Overall it’s a good manhwa better than isekai trash. Placid in how there’s no source of huge dopamine but continuous dopamine. P.S. Mistranslation of the title. The english title is not translated correct as 華山 (hua-san, pretty mountain) has nothing to do with 火山(hua-san, volcano) Correct translation should be “Reincarnated Disciple of Mount Hua or Past Life at Mount Hua Sect or Reincarnation in Mount Hua Sect.” Although they are similar there are no plagiarism issues. The elements created by Jin Yong are actually traditional clichés, and copyright protects expression, not ideas. They have already become part of the genre conventions, so anyone can freely use them.
