I feel conflicted about recommending this story. The first 75-80 chapters are a difficult read. The toxicity is real and it is frustrating that the ml is as dense as he is. But 80 onward is pretty great. There are heart wrenching moments and great romance scenes. I don't fully understand the reasons some of the things happened, but they weren't bad and the healing process felt natural and blended with the romance well. The characters were really well written and there were very few minor characters that we didn't know much about. Every character that had more than a couple panels felt real andwell fleshed out. I felt really good after reading it but it probably would have caused me to lose some sleep if I took a break before 80 and tried to sleep. The toxic is probably the worst I've completed but the healing and love on the other side was very strong. The art was decent and I enjoyed most of the panels. There weren't any over the top depictions and the proportions of all the characters felt natural and normal. Oh and I love the head maid. Just putting that out there. I wish my mom was like her. All in all, if you are uncomfortable with abuse and toxic stories, this probably isn't for you. The slow pacing and slog fest that is the absolute toxic environment fills more than half of the manhwa. Things do get better but both main characters suffer greatly and the realistic depictions of mental health and suicidal behavior are very vivid and real.
Forced to wed the daughter of his bitter enemy, King Karloi of Croisen is far from happy with his marriage. His wife, Evonne Deluah, is a symbol of his helplessness—a constant reminder of the deaths he failed to prevent at the hands of her father. Still, Karloi holds out hope that his first love lives on, all the while opposing Duke Deluah in any way he can. To this end, he takes on a concubine, an act unheard of in recent years, further undermining Evonne's tenuous authority in the palace. Unbeknownst to Karloi, Evonne is harboring her own secrets—she too is just another victim of Duke Deluah. Despite her refined appearance, she was once a peasant known as Rue. As much as she longs to disclose her real identity to Karloi, a horrible curse prevents her from uttering the truth. To make matters worse, her mother remains an unknowing hostage of the duke. As Karloi continues his endless search for a girl he cannot be certain survived, he finds himself sparking a mysterious connection with Evonne. Meanwhile, the forsaken queen continues to dream of a life where she and her mother can simply live in peace, free from the struggle for the throne. [Written by MAL Rewrite]
