Short: On the surface, Moteki is a hilarious comedy about a virgin loser trying to get with women. A little deeper, it's an honest and raw story about discovering oneself and finding happiness. Longer: I've read three of Kubo-sensei's works: Again!!, Moteki, and 3.3.7 Byooshi, and they're all fantastic. She really likes main characters who fit the "loser" stereotype in one way or another. In 3.3.7 Byooshi, it's a country hick in the big city. In Again!!, it's a loner. And here in Moteki, it's virgin* loser Fuji who has no self-confidence. It's hard to talk about Moteki without bringing up Welcome to the NHK, another redemptionstory about a loser, and one of my favorite series. Like Satou from NHK, Fuji is an amazingly flawed character who constantly messes things up, and constantly thinks of how other people see him. Listening to his internal debates and thoughts is a real treat, especially when all of the other characters are so flawed too. It becomes this wonderful mess of misunderstandings where Fuji can't tell what's going on because he's thinking of only himself, but the other person isn't much better. I think that anybody could appreciate some of what makes Fuji tick, even if they might not be in his shoes. His path to building self-confidence is frustratingly slow and painful, but in some sense it feels more real than any other manga I've read. * not really a virgin
In the vast metropolis of Tokyo, 20-year-old Yukiyo Fujimoto has resigned himself to a loveless life. He is only a temporary worker with no dreams, aspirations, or expectations whatsoever. Yukiyo finds himself coming into sudden contact with various women he has known from the past: Natsuki Komiyama, an unrequited love; Aki Doi, a crush from a previous job; Itsuka Nakashiba, a friend he had shown interest in; and Naoko Hayashida, a former delinquent classmate whose behavior charms and intrigues him. Remembering a similar occurrence of events happening to an acquaintance, Yukiyo begins to wonder whether it's finally time for his "moteki," a period of time in a person's life when they suddenly and inexplicably become greatly attractive to their romantic interests. Said to happen only a few times in one's life, Yukiyo finds himself incentivized to chase after love with a vigor he had never felt in his life before. Will the luckless Yukiyo finally find the exciting and fulfilling romance he had given up on? [Written by MAL Rewrite] Included one-shot: Volume 1: Linda Linda
This is one for the losers. The 30-year-old virgins who aged into "wizards" with as much fanfare as a clogged up trumpet. This is for the late-(maybe-never)-bloomers who experienced the biological changes of puberty, without ever living the hallmark moments of it. If you've made it to 30 years old (or close enough), and you find yourself feeling hopeless despair about being cursed to be alone forever, then this manga is for you. The MC will say many things that you've said to yourself, and it will hit you like a freight train whenever he does. I wish I could find another manga like this. The problem is it's the sort of story that reads as pathetic and off-putting to anyone in a relationship, or who has no issues finding one. It was written by a female mangaka. She must have mined a lot of material from virgin male friends. The story has too much verisimilitude to have not been the result of paying close attention to somebodies lived experiences.
