Akkan Baby is a Shoujo manga about a stupid-crazy teen couple that now have to deal with the issues of teen pregnancy. Even though it deals with a serious issue it can be hard to take it seriously with a couple this dumb. This turned out to be an unexpectedly great shoujo manga, as it is able to deliver its jokes in such a stupidly funny way but still retain some realism, for it to become serious whenever it needs to. It has a very standard artwork which is typical for shoujo manga however when things get whacky, so does the artwork. The two main charactersare what bring the whacky artwork to life, with their hilarious antics and weird personalities. Yet apart form the two main characters, there really isn't anyone else that is developed as well, in this short manga. This is a really enjoyable manga that manages to deal with the seriousness of teen pregnancy in such a fun way. Even though it's short enough to finish in a day the story doesn't feel rushed at all, as it develops nicely however I do feel that more could have been done. ^_^
High schoolers Yuki and Shigeru aren't dating, but still enjoy a highly active sexual relationship. Naïve and still very child-like in the way they think, it comes as a great shock to them when Shigeru discovers she's pregnant. The two are confronted with the decision of aborting the baby and wounding Shigeru, or to keep it and face great opposition from their parents and high school, and *gasp* miss their beloved Conflict concerts!
the manga has rough art and main characters that are childish, crazy, a bit ignorant and immature. The story however makes up for all these. What makes this story beautiful though is the way the characters develop when faced with the issue of teenage pregnancy. At first, they're completely blind and hopeless but slowly, they grow-- and you'll learn to love them the whole way. Not only are the main characters admirable, but also the people that surrounds them which just paints a pretty picture about family, friends and support. The story is a learning experience through and through.
This manga was beyond entertaining, it had my interest the entire time! Shigeru and Yuki were some idiotic, naive, and lovable goofballs throughout the story. They had sex constantly in the first volume, yet neither of them knew what condoms were! Both did have to make some mature decisions later on but remained childish which is true to their personalities. This story was hilarious and dabbled in slapstick often, but any discussions by Yuki and Shigeru's respective parents shed a serious light. A character that was clearly meant to be hated in the third volume showed her humanity. She was not an entirely cruel person because ofthat, this manga gets a thumbs up from me. It went beyond the cliché bad guy route. It also showed with Shigeru's classmates, that if you are trying to do good and help someone, to not take advantage of the situation for ulterior motives. I like that weren't any stereotypical character molds (like shy kid, tsundere kid, pervert kid, etc). (Yuki's character is a bit debatable! He's your basic genki guy...Reminds me of Luffy!) I really enjoyed all the characters! Yuki is my favorite. He has so many off the wall and heartfelt responses. I loved the Conflict rock band members too. Despite being a wild bunch, they were very mature and helped in the beginning stages of the pregnancy. My least liked character would probably be Shigeru's dad, but I understand his frustrations. I was so ready for him to knock the stuffing out of Yuki. Of course, that would have been predicable so the manga went another interesting route! The artwork was pretty! It was no eyesore for me! Good art and an enjoyable story! In conclusion, this is a short manga series good for reading anytime! It is also holds great re-read value for me. I can see myself going back to all my favorite parts over and over again. This does not really count as a spoiler but... I was wrong hehe! The baby was my favorite character! With parents like that, I can't believe the baby's personality was so different! I wish we could have seen more of Shigeru ,Yuki, and their baby! Maybe it's best it ended where it did. You know, keep it simple...
A manga about an enthusiastic couple and the girl gets pregnant. Then there on forward it's about the trials they go through and the last volume Is the best in my opinion! The art was very good and made me laugh A NUMBER of times! The story was realistic (in the sense of a teenage pregnancy) and at the end I felt like crying because it was so sweet and cute ^^ a really well thought out story at the end I wasn't expecting the girl to get into that position!
Akkan Baby is one of those stories that excites you more from dialogues, than from the whole story. The beginning of the manga is excellent presenting the characters and the secondary ones. Soon after, it enters deeper into the plot between the protagonist couple with their challenges and their problems. Core values for all of us like family, friendship, loyalty, love and courage are illustrated right in front of us without any code or subliminal way. Despite a much more mature story, Akkan Baby takes all the themes addressed in it seriously.
