This manga excels at keeping you on edge. While it has the vibes of a soap opera, I was thoroughly entertained by the tenseness of every reveal and would not say itâs melodramatic. Rather, it lacks the dumb twists I anticipated, subverting those expectations in place of âadult-likeâ drama and suspense that culminated to something satisfying. The biggest mystery is discerning what every character is actually thinking or actually knows, like whoâs to blame or whoâs the victim, which pairs well with the subtle dialogue you can easily miss while flipping through every page thinking âWhat the fuck am I reading/is going on?â Its short runtimeworks in its favor, helping avoid dragging most of its plot points. I wouldnât call reading this weekly a fun ride, but it was very good at creating an apprehensive atmosphere. The conclusionâhappy ending or notâended this dumpster fire fantastically. Spoilers below. Among her yaoi oneshot and Dear Sa-chan, Ioriâs art did not save their mediocrity. Serious subjects do not equate to a good narrative. Thankfully, this plot isnât dogwater. Reikaâs kid not being Shuujiâs plus his infertility, Miyu actually being a good character, Kai not getting murked, Sakurabaâs memory loss, Kamoshita needing meds, Ebihara not being a nutjob, Reikaâs previous pregnancy and abortionâthese curveballs worked unlike Shuujiâs balls because they didnât break the plot and werenât wacky. It was fun to imagine her as some gaslighting, gatekeeping girlboss, but that wouldâve been silly. Reika was not some yandere mastermind, and Haruma didnât have a split personality responsible for killing Shuuji. They just both suffer from trauma, were held down for years by that turmoil, and successfully found support in each otherâs company. They found genuine happiness together in the end. ClichĂ© as it is, it was the sweetness I appreciated from this bleak love story. I didnât enjoy how I knew the baby was Harumaâs by like Ch. 13, yet the author kept dilly-dallying. It felt painfully obvious as the manga went on. The only way it wasnât his would be if some entirely different person was involved, and Ebiharaâs arc did not persuade me at all. Anyway, I reread the flashbacks of Reika and Shuujiâs marriage while listening to Kendrick Lamarâs âWe Cry Togetherâ to soak in the inspo, and Iâm glad I picked this up because Black Cat Scans were shilling it until their last* breath. This really was a dog and a scum. Yay!
Haruma Sakuraba's childhood friend Shuuji Inukai was a cut above him in every way imaginable, living out the glamorous life bestowed upon him. Haruma, an unassuming salaryman, has lived his every day clutching onto his inferiority complex, existing only in Shuuji's shadow. One day, Haruma coincidentally meets Shuuji's wife, Reika Sumi, who Haruma has always secretly admired since his high school days. With feelings of envy, jealousy, and more, a "secret" is born from Haruma's repetitive days. (Source: Kodansha, translated)
Quick note: the manga has 41.5 chapters, not 43 as MAL has noted for some reason. -- Onto the review: simply said, I feel this is a severely underrated manga. I'm giving it a solid 8.5/10 based on three main factors: - The constant sense of suspense/eerily-thrilling-feeling - The simply gorgeous art/drawing style - How re-reading the first half after getting to the end gives you a completely new perspective on what's happening in the initial chapters I'd add one more: brevity. The author doesn't milk the story; these 41.5 chapters are fairly short at 18-19 pages each. The story is compact, fillerless and straight to the point. Respect to AsagaIori for that. A lot can be written about the psychological portraits of each character. I don't want to write a spoiler-filled review when doing that, though. I suggest you lead your own conclusions; all I've got to say is that this is a refreshingly mature manga in the sense of exploring how flawed we humans can be. Are there soapy bits? Of course there are, but I feel they're toned down to a healthy amount. Some plotlines/character appearances are a bit too forced, but not uncomfortably so. Read this. It's short, rewarding, and will keep you on the edge. The beautiful art is a welcome addition.
I had no idea what I was going to be expecting when I started reading the manga but after the first chapter, I was instantly hooked. This manga will keep you wanting more and more and the suspense is so intense. I am someone who loves mystery but not in a dark story but Inu to Kuzu is more than a dark mystery story. It is full of crazy, creepy, and insane plot twists that keep you on the edge and wanting more. The story feels out of place, it just happens all of a sudden that you can't focus on what's happening. Sakuraba's character reallycaught my interest. His being amnesiac and clueless about everything that was happening around him and supporting the person he likes with all his effort was the only good trait I saw in him and it was admirable. On the other hand, Reika was very very mysterious and the way her nature was portrayed felt kinda creepy. Her character will make you ask questions like What's she up to? What does she want to do and Why is she lying so much? I didn't really like her that much but getting to the close end of the manga, I understood her intentions but it most of the time felt she was using Sakuraba for her own beneift. Shuuji on the other hand was like a good guy in disguise when deep down, he's a playboy manipulator who pretends to care for Sakuraba. He was an interesting character and his addition even drove the story to the extreme even though he was not really present. The whole story I felt was developed around Shuuji but the strongest part of the manga was the craziness of the characters. Every character in the manga was scary, crazy, and insane on their own but all that reaches its breaking point where tears will be shed, fights will be inevitable, friendships will be tested and dying inside and facing the harsh reality of accepting the truth. The manga was a good experience for me and this is the manga for anyone that want crazy and insane plot twists.
I will definitely remember this one. A lot of twists happen in this manga that will shock you and although the premise may not appeal to some I promise that it's not about NTR. It only has 41 chapters and you should give it a try if you're looking for good romance story or thrills, although a flaw I will point out is how they attempted to make Shuuji (the blonde guy) likable towards the end although I do know that this is suppose to very realistic manga and not everyone is just all flaws I would've preferred Shuuji as a complete scumbag.
My god...Why have I not heard of this series before or hear anybody talking about it? The story is thrilling, the characters more complex than your typical romance manga, and the art is amazing. This story is a real page turner. Every chapter just keeps getting more twisted and more questions are raised...well until the end. Everything is really condensed and it fits nicely into this little story. If you like dark romance stories, this is a must read. I don't often say a series is underrated but this one is for sure. I'm glad I randomly found this since I never hear anybody talk aboutit.
