Awwe, they grow up so fast! Their relationship was really cute and too wholesome. I wish I was as academically driven and a pursuer of dreams while I was still studying, then I would've have been in a field where I am interested in. But sometimes studying is so boring and thinking of going to school everyday was too tiresome. In their case, they were both inspired to work hard in order for them to get into the same university and be able to stay close with each other. It's true that if you have someone you can rely on and encourages you on something, you better believe you can do it. I hope there's more to their story though. I would like to see their uni and adult lives wondering if it's as chill as this one.
"Our grade's top scorer, an unapproachable guy, only opens up to me. That's so friggin' adorable!" Saegusa is utterly bored of his high school life. Along comes Arochi Tooru, a guy with the brightest hair heβs ever seen, who transfers into his class. It's an oddity already, for some guy with outrageous looks and a cold attitude, to transfer into a prep school. So he immediately draws the attention of everyone in his class. What's more, he's apparently a genius who cinches the top spot in their grade on their class exam. One day, Saegusa uses a common point of interest to approach Arochi, and the two start to become closer. But once they become friends, Arochi is actually really oblivious and cute! Saegusa just can't take his eyes off this cutie! (Source: Sankosha, translated)
This is one of the most wholesome and non-toxic relationships I have ever come across in BL comics. So, our protagonist Saegusa Issei lives a 'boring' life as a high school senior. He doesn't have any motivation to do better in his academics despite knowing that he has the potential. Here comes the new transfer student, Arochi Tooru, who stands out because of his unique hair colour and facial expressions. What initially started as a curiosity on Saegusa's part of wanting to know more about Arochi turned into something more as they spent more time with each other. They motivate and support each other toachieve their dreams while being deeply in love with each other. What I really liked about these characters is how vocal they are about their problems and thoughts. Their relationship is consensual and balanced, not like most BLs these days where one overwhelms the other both emotionally and physically. These kinds of stories reinstate my belief in love and mutual affection. From a critical standpoint, I guess the only field where people might find it lacking is art. The art is great but not extraordinary. The characters look like high school seniors and suit their personalities very well. I highly recommend this manga to all the BL readers. It's also a good one to pick up for beginners. This is the kind of manga that is capable of lifting your prejudice against same-sex love. It's beautifully written and illustrated. I hope it gets adapted into a drama or an anime sometime. I will definitely read more of this author's works.
On paper, the premise of this story is predictable; an ordinary youth, previously content with going with the flow and conforming to society's wish, meets a strange but earnest youth and learns to work hard for what they actually want in life. This is a common premise in a growing up story. But the execution makes all the difference here. For one, the characters are incredibly fleshed out, acting more like actual teenagers instead of a bundle of archetypes. And their bonds are really palpable. You get a clear sense that oh yeah these two people really enjoy each other's company. When they are with eachother, things become so cute. And the MC's subtle obsessiveness when it comes to the ML is also refreshing because it's a very grounded form of obsession, never really crossing to the depths of drama BL can sometimes go but still enough to make your heart aflutter. The plot is also refreshingly grounded, focused more on the evolving dynamics between the two characters more than any sort of 'plot'. There's also plenty of communication, and while there are some misunderstanding but it's a very understandable one.
