"God's in His Heaven" is a somber slice-of-life about a girl whose parents are dead, and is presently visiting her sick uncle, who adopted her and her younger sister, in the hospital. On the technical side, this is a competent manga. Panels flow from one to the other in a logical manner, and there is just the right detail and focus on certain characters and expressions to convey the necessary emotion. There is also a brief comedic moment that succeeded in making me laugh slightly. That's more than most comedy one-shots have managed, so it deserves credit there. Unfortunately, this manga lacks any real punchline or purpose. The revelation by the doctor is so obvious that everyone probably guessed it when they read the synopsis on this page. Afterwards, there are some panels of little consequence and the work ends, with no message or resolution. As such, one is left with a feeling of indifference. There is nothing particularly bad or weak about the one-shot, but nothing particularly good, either. One wonders what the point of it all was.
Misaki's parents are dead, and she lives with her sick uncle, who is now hospitalized, while taking care of her younger sister. Her younger sister notices the family drama around them and feels scared of what is to come. Misaki simply lives, always hoping for the best. (Source: MU)
