This is kind of terrible. Chida-sensei draws well and can come up with interesting plotlines most of the time as evidenced by both this and his other works, but in this case the story is massively hindered by his torture porn fetish. Throughout the entirety of this manga, I am kept thinking how much time is being wasted on this fetish specifically, and how the characters would be much more interesting if they weren't bound to this particular gimmick. Somewhere before the halfway point of the manga you kind of get the idea how most things conclude, so everything past that point felt inorganic dueto that. I keep thinking how the premise of this manga minus the torture porn, if given to someone else, has the potential to be much more interesting. That's not a good sign for sure. Chida-sensei is a competent mangaka, but this one was a miss. Reading this was mostly a waste of my time.
A high school girl gets transported to a virtual reality where she gets killed by monsters & returns to the real world, again & again. (Source: Manga Mogura)
If one of your go-to tags on “SadPanda” includes “ryona” or “guro”, then maybe this manga might have some appeal to you. If those tags aren’t your thing, you’d be reading at least 80+ chapters purely dedicated to the author’s fetish for drawing girls crying and getting maimed/killed. The story starts off with an interesting enough premise of people getting summoned into a deadly video game with a “player” and “character”. However, this evolves into a contrived melodrama of how edgy human nature can be, with a particular focus of male-on-female sexual violence (physically and psychologically). That could be useful for shock value, but the pacingof the chapters will frequently dedicate 3-6 chapters at a time just to show a character getting tortured to someone’s amusement. Which is very tiring if this isn’t your fetish/kink. The characters generally lack meaningful depth to them, usually presented with tragic circumstances and just repeating torture as-nauseam until the final quarter of the manga, where they finally display some sort of emotional growth/strength. Artwork is competent, but unremarkable and forgettable scenes. Unless you enjoy looking at anime girls with various shocked and crying expressions. Even if you power through to the end of the series for the sake of the actual plot, the final arc seems to be geared to justify the gratuitous amounts of torture, rather than feel like a natural plot progression. If there is one thing I was left with by the end, it would be despair that I wasted a few hours of my life reading this. Unless this is your kink, then maybe it’ll be hours well spent.
