Kimi ni Todoke: Soulmate was a much needed spinoff for readers who appreciated Kurumi's character in the original Kimi ni Todoke series! She's always been a character I enjoyed from the original series because she was such an interesting and well-written "villain." After seeing how her relationship with Sawako developed in the original Kimi ni Todoke series, I had always wished to see more of her—and the author granted that wish! In this series, Kurumi finally gets her own love story, but not without some challenges. She must overcome her fears of being disliked for her personality, as well as learn to accept and forgiveherself, too. Being honest and true to her feelings does not prove easy, though! The author also brings in a character from another previous work of hers, Crazy For You, who honestly was the perfect match for Kurumi. I really enjoyed seeing their chemistry, and feel so happy that Kurumi got her turn in the spotlight—with of course, some background support from our beloved Sawako. Overall, if you loved Ume Kurumizawa in the original series, definitely check out this adorable spinoff! If you haven't read Crazy for You, I don't think you'll be completely lost reading this side story—but it can really help give you more insight for the male lead if you do choose to read that series first. If you are a Kurumi fan like myself, please check out my blog for a full review of Kimi ni Todoke: Soulmate! ❤︎
With her jet-black hair, sinister smile, and silent demeanor, Sawako "Sadako" Kuronuma always had trouble fitting in during high school. But with help from her friends, her boyfriend Kazehaya, and even her rival-turned-friend Kurumi, Sawako came out of her shell. Now in college, Sawako and Kurumi have become incredibly close, but Kurumi longs for a romance of her own. Despite considering herself unlovable, and despite feeling deeply satisfied with Sawako's companionship, Kurumi decides to put herself out there and try dating. When she's pestered by a persistent suitor after a party, a handsome stranger comes to her rescue. He looks suspiciously like Sawako...or not so suspicious, considering that he is actually Sawako's cousin! When Kurumi starts to feel drawn to him, could it be love? (Source: VIZ Media)
A great spin-off to Kimi ni Todoke. It's structured a little differently, but it works just as well. You can't really go wrong with 13 chapters, so it's worth reading if you enjoyed the original series. Feels nice seeing a bit more depth for characters we didn't get a complete ending for, and it's always good to get more of a series you loved to begin with. Story feels predictable, but not in a bad way, and it's characters we mostly already know so that doesn't hurt either. Hard to elaborate too much as it's super short, (would've loved it to be longer), but worth theread for sure!
